  • President L. Brent Goates was Jonathan’s Mission President in the great California Arcadia Mission. We had the privilege to have dinner with him every month for the last 30 months as we served in the Family and Church History Headquarters Mission in Salt Lake City, UT. Last month in October, our last dinner with him, he requested a chocolate milk shake from his favorite Hiers Big H Drive-In. We had a lovely visit with him. We will miss his friendship, his wit and humor, his generous compliments, his willingness to share his testimony with us and his knowledge of church history. He told us countless times how much he missed his wife and eternal companion, Sister Helen Lee Goates, and we know it is a wonderful reunion they are having now. We will forever be indebted to our friend, President Goates.

  • I received word today of the recent passing of my Mission President L. Brent Goates. I regret that the funeral was this morning and I was unable to attend. He was like a father to me and I will be forever grateful for his love and friendship. I am happy for him because he is now with his wife Helen and other loved ones who have left this mortal existence.
What I cherished most are the letters which I’ve kept that he would send his missionaries faithfully every six months for the past 30 years. They would come like clock work on the Tuesday or Wednesday prior to Conference weekend. His two page epistles were words of counsel and gospel truths that were close to his heart at that time. He worked hard to maintain relationships with his missionaries. He has been in our home for Sunday dinner, performed the marriage of our oldest daughter Emilee and Ric in the SLC Temple and has supported our son Ryan as he served his mission in the Dominican Republic.
My heart is full and I am truly thankful for this wonderful man and his wife Helen.

  • I am sad yet I rejoice in knowing Pres. Goates is with his sweetheart again. Pres. and Sis. Goates were my anchor. I love them both dearly and I take great comfort in knowing that through the tender mercies of our Savior, I will see them both again. I can honestly say that I am the person I am because of their unconditional love and support. My love and prayers to the Goates family.

  • I just heard the news and was so sad to learn of the passing of Uncle Brent. I and our whole family extend our love and condolences . He was a great and extraordinary man, and certainly represents the passing of an era. But I have wonderful 2012 memories as he joined us for my Dad’s funeral. He was charming and delightful, always with a twinkle in his eye, and joy in his heart. But my memories started as a little kid at Goates reunions, when Uncle Brent would always go out of his way to make me feel special. It’s gotta be a great Goates reunion going on “up there” — that’s all I can say.
    Love to all, Carolyn
