April 29, 1940•October 17, 2026
Catherine “Cathy” Nelson Tingey, wife of Lowell Rees Tingey (1996), passed away peacefully on October 17, 2026. She was surrounded in love by her children the days preceding her passing.
She was born to Wayne and Maxine Nelson on April 29, 1940 and was raised in Perry, Utah. Her childhood years were shaped by her home life on the farm and the hard work and loving care of her parents and siblings. Her childhood friends called her “Squirt,” a name fitting for her life.
The oldest of four siblings and only girl, Cathy was the beloved daughter and sister in her family. She enjoyed music and was a talented singer and pianist.
She was educated at Utah State University. And although first an Aggie, she soon converted to a Cougar after spending years at BYU supporting and sustaining her husband.
On June 10, 1962, Lowell and Cathy were married in the Salt Lake Temple.
All her life she said her greatest joys were found in being a mother to her six children: Don, Tami, Ryan, Jann, David, and Karen. She joyfully devoted herself to building their faith and taking care of their needs.
The abundant joy of raising her children was greatly magnified by the arrival of 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She loved her Savior Jesus Christ and exemplified her love over the years through dedicated, charitable service as a friend, neighbor, ministering sister/visiting teacher, primary president, relief society president, ward chorister, pianist, mission leader (Pittsburg, PA 1989-92), and temple ordinance worker (Oquirrh Mountain, 2009-2026).
For nearly 20 years, she faithfully volunteered at the headquarters of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, giving countless hours to preserving the stories of those who came before, helping ensure that these treasured accounts would remain accessible for generations to come. She especially loved helping others discover the histories of their ancestors and connecting them with the people and stories that shaped their family heritage. Her service extended through her local DUP camps in Perry and Herriman. She did not simply preserve pioneer stories—she lived the same spirit of faith, perseverance, service, and devotion that characterized those whose histories she so lovingly protected.
She recognized the blessings of living the covenant path. As the temple ordinance worker and matriarch of her family, she regularly emphasized the importance of strengthening your relationship with your Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ through prayer, scripture study and most importantly making and keeping sacred covenants, especially those made in the House of the Lord.
She is survived by her children Don (Lori) Tingey, Tami (Richard) Grant, Ryan (Lauren) Tingey, Jann Tingey, David (Laura) Tingey, and Karen (Tyler) Pew, and sibling Paul (Mary) Nelson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Tingey, her parents, Wayne and Maxine Nelson, Lowell’s parents, Robert and Jennie Tingey, and brothers Roger (Raylene) Nelson and Scott (Phyllis) Nelson.
The family appreciates the dedicated and thoughtful care by doctors, nurses and hospice care.
