June 24, 1951•October 21, 2026
In loving memory of David Yuen Hong 湯文光.
湯文光David Yuen Hong, age 75, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2026.
David was born on June 24, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was always ready to teach everyone the best way to do something, because he had to learn the hard way. Every lesson was to create a better and easier life for his children.
He also loved engineering, from cars to computers and technology to handywork around the house. He might not have known how to fix everything, but he was always ready to learn and find a solution. And as a last resort, YouTube.
For decades, David owned and operated the Ding Ho Café. He loved cooking and could always produce the fastest orders. He knew his way around the restaurant and was always preparing 5 steps ahead. After retiring from the restaurant, he continued to share his love of cooking and offering cooking advice, but always kept the secret for the best Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. His delicious cooking always brought everyone together, with generous portions enough for leftovers for days, sometimes weeks.
Throughout his life, he was a practical joker, even landing himself the nickname, “Betty”. He loved to laugh and shared the laughter wherever he went. He worked hard, but worked even harder on showing ways that he cared or was thinking of you.
David was preceded in death by his parents Yuen Shep Sun Hong and Marge Choi Hong.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ming Huie Hong. He is also survived by his children and grandchildren: daughter, Jennifer Hong-VanCuren (Joseph VanCuren), and grandchildren Jaylee and Jace VanCuren; daughter, Jamie Hong (Joshua Perry) and grandchildren Addison and Kaden Perry; daughter, Monica Hong and grandchild Lincoln Hong; and son, Davis Hong.
David leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom. We love and miss you. You still live within us and through generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to a family support fund. We appreciate your love and generosity in remembrance of David.
A private funeral service with close friends and family will be held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111.
