Elaine Goodfellow Smith

Elaine Goodfellow Smith, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at her daughter’s home in Independence Missouri.

She was born Rhea Elaine Goodfellow, to Clifford Brown and Leah Lenora Hogge Goodfellow on July 23, 1931 at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born minutes after her identical twin sister Lorraine Goodfellow Young. She had four other siblings (Norman, Ludeen, Hal and Nola Gay).

Elaine and Lorraine were inseparable throughout their lives. They grew up in Bountiful Utah and learned the value of hard work as they helped run family businesses and worked many jobs in the community. They were very sociable and always on the go with their friends.

Right after graduation from Davis High School, Elaine married Lynn Wallace Rose on July 20, 1949, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They had three children, Mark, Jeff and Laurie. They later divorced.

A lady of class and elegance, Elaine took great pride in her appearance. She loved to entertain and enjoyed hosting special occasions and knew how to make everyone feel special and appreciated. She was civic minded and devoted significant time and resources to serving in her church and volunteering in the community. Elaine loved to read and especially enjoyed history and biographies. She also loved classical music. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. On one trip Elaine and Lorraine visited eleven countries in a month.

Later in life, Elaine found love again when she met Douglas Allan Smith. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, November 1995. He was the joy of her life, and she gained a beloved extended family. They travelled together, and with family and friends. They loved spending time with family and enjoyed serving in various assignments together in their church. Doug was a very kind, loving and devoted companion. Elaine treasured the relationship she built with each member of the Smith family.

Elaine is survived by her three children, Mark Rose (Sally) of Twin Falls Idaho; Jeff Rose (Paula, deceased) of Elko Nevada; Laurie Jarvis (Mark) of Independence Missouri. 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Douglas of 25 years, her parents and her siblings.

Funeral services will be held Thursday July 23, 2026 at 11:00 am at the LDS Stake Center located at 3151 S 900 E in Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:45 am.

Interment will take place at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
