In Loving Memory of Jerry D. Howe (1943–2026)
Jerry Dalphus Howe, a visionary entrepreneur, devoted family man, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026. He was 83 years old. After a long and full life, Jerry passed from advanced age and complications related to dementia/Alzheimer's.
Born on May 1, 1943, in Aransas Pass, Texas, to Eveline Hall Hixenbaugh and Milan Purvis, Jerry’s life was defined by a tireless work ethic and a deep commitment to service. In 1961, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving with distinction aboard the USS Midway. Later in life, Jerry was fascinated to discover his paternal roots through DNA testing, which connected him to the Purvis family line in Georgia. Though they were discovered recently, he took great pride in this heritage and his many newly found relatives.
Shortly after his military service, Jerry married the love of his life, Sylvia Gayle Bruerton, on May 2, 1964. Together, they embarked on a journey that would span over six decades and six children. After honing his skills at Bay Alarm in Oakland, California, Jerry and Gayle moved to Salt Lake City in 1969 to chase the American Dream. There, they founded Peak Alarm Company, Inc.
Under Jerry’s leadership, Peak Alarm grew from a local startup into one of the largest multi-regional security companies in the United States, providing safety and peace of mind to thousands. Jerry’s lifelong dedication to the industry culminated in the prestigious 2023 National Dealer of the Year award. At its height, his company employed nearly 500 people across Utah, Idaho, and Colorado, a testament to his role as a respected pillar of the business community.
Beyond his professional success, Jerry was a man of faith and community. He was an active member of the LDS church and spent many years mentoring young men as a dedicated Scout Leader. Jerry found his greatest joy in his renowned show car collection, his many loyal dogs, and his deep passion for the outdoors. This love for the land led him to establish a Blue Spruce tree farm in the Heber Valley and Charleston areas, leaving a living legacy in the soil he loved.
Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Russ Hixenbaugh, Brother Chuck Purvis from Florida and his son, Tim Howe. He is survived by his mother, Eveline Hall Hixenbaugh; his brothers, Wayne Hixenbaugh and Ray Hixenbaugh, John Davis Austin, Texas; his son, Rick Howe, and grandson, Jayden; his daughter, Julie (Don) Weakley, and grandchildren Robbie, Ryan, and Taylor; his son, Jeff (Roxana) Howe, and grandchildren Michael, Nicholas, and Victoria; his son, Tyler Howe; and his daughter, Renae (Brenan) Douglas, and grandchildren Landon and Blake.
The family will be holding private funeral services to honor Jerry's life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Alzheimer's charities in his memory.
Jerry Dalphus Howe leaves behind a legacy of security, growth, and family. He will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, his service to his country, and the quiet beauty of the Blue Spruces he planted in the Heber Valley.
