Ned LeGrande Mangelson, MD

Ned LeGrande Mangelson, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born May 16, 1933, in Levan, Utah, the second child to Sarah Reba Poulsen and LeGrande Mangelson. Ned grew up on the farm in Levan, Utah, where he learned the meaning of hard work with his loving family. At the young age of 10, he completed the morning chores milking the cows and feeding the pigs while his father was called to serve a mission in the Northeastern states, leaving his pregnant wife to run the farm and care for three young children.

He attended Juab High School where he excelled in school making many friends. Ned was elected class president all four years at Juab High and played the saxophone in the marching band. He began taking piano lessons at the age of 12 and enjoyed playing throughout his life. It was at Juab High, that he met the love of his life, Ruth Alene Pratt, and enjoyed many dances and double dates before becoming high-school sweethearts their senior year.

Ned attended BYU for one year in 1952, where he was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma fraternity that recognized students for their high moral standards and exceptional academic achievement. Ned then transferred to the University of Utah to be nearer to Alene. Thinking he could not serve a mission because of the Korean War and the draft, Ned and Alene got engaged to be married; however, when a mission call came, he got a release from the draft board, but not from the engagement. Ned and Alene spent the next three years (1953-1956), writing letters to each other three times a week while Ned served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Swiss-Austrian Mission. Ned loved his mission. While serving in Switzerland, Ned translated for then President David O. McKay at the Bern, Switzerland Temple dedication, and also played the organ for several of the dedication sessions.

One month after his return from his mission, Ned and Alene were married on June 29, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. Their love affair continued for more than 70 years. Together they had four children, Marie, Mark, Michael and Michelle

Ned graduated from the University of Utah in 1958, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with the highest overall GPA of all students in the graduating class. He was one of four named to Phi Betta Kappa at the University of Utah. He also received honors from Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Epsilon Honor Society. Ned later attended the University of Utah Medical School (1958-1961), and completed 5 years of residency in Urology at UCLA, in California.

While in medical school, Ned enlisted in the Navy. Following medical school, he was deployed to Vietnam for 9 months, leaving behind his wife and their three young children. He was quickly advanced to a Lieutenant. He was aboard the Henrico ship, an attack transport that delivered the first Marines’ amphibious landings in Vietnam on March 5, 1965.

In 1969, Ned and Alene moved their family from California to Salt Lake City, Utah, making it their home for the past 56 years. He joined the Salt Lake Clinic as their first urologist and practiced for 27 years before retiring. He loved practicing medicine and enjoyed his association with his colleagues and patients. A highlight for him was working alongside his son, Michael, who eventually took over his urology practice.

His love of the gospel of Jesus Christ guided him throughout his life and provided many service opportunities, leadership responsibilities and cherished memories that shaped his life. Throughout his life, he excelled at piano and the organ and used his talent playing for others in church and at The Salt Lake Temple. A highlight was playing the organ at The Tabernacle with teacher Bonnie Goodliff. He loved working with the students as a bishop at the University of Utah student ward and again as bishop of the Monument Park 13th Ward. His service together with Alene as Mission Leaders in the Vienna Austria Mission (1996-1999), impacted their lives greatly as they found joy in seeing the gospel of Jesus Christ change people's lives. They loved their missionaries with whom they served and considered them family. Upon returning from Austria, he continued to work for the church, assisting the Church Missionary Department by providing medical help for missionaries around the world. He was a sealer in the Salt Lake Temple, and performed many marriages for friends and family members. Ned was also a patriarch and served in that calling until 2020, when he took emeritus status.

Ned was truly a friend to everyone. He enjoyed all of the fine arts, photography, gardening and travel. He loved being with his children and grandchildren and took them on several cruises over the years, creating memories that will forever be cherished.

Ned’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for his caretakers at Aspen Ridge Hospice and The Ridge.

Ned is survived by his wife, Alene Pratt Mangelson, children, Marie Mangelson Berg (David), Mark Mangelson (Becky Tremea), Michael Mangelson (Jane Parsons), Michelle Mangelson Wilcox (Nathan), 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, plus one on the way, Sister, Bessie Mangelson Witt (Gerald), Sister-in-law, Sandra Mangelson. He is preceded in death by his father, LeGrande Mangelson, mother, Sarah Reba Poulsen Mangelson, brothers Phillip, David and Maynard Mangelson, and a Sister-in-law, Renae Westering Mangelson.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1320 Wasatch Dr., and on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:45 a.m., at the same location. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 11, 2026, at 11:00 am at the same location. Ned will be interred at the Salt Lake Cemetery.
