Thurma "Lee" Sprouse

April 16, 1938•October 20, 2026

Our devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Thurma Lee Sprouse, passed away peacefully at home on October 20, 2026.
Lee was born on April 16, 1938, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Thurman Eustice Yates and Mabel Lee Gunther. Her father, Thurman, was a pilot during World War II, and Lee shared his love of flying. He taught her to fly a plane before she learned to drive a car.
On June 13, 1956, Lee married the love of her life, Stuart J. Sprouse, after just four weeks of dating. Soon afterward, she moved to Utah while Stu was deployed. When Stu returned home, he came home to Terry; Jack and Steven later followed. Lee and Stu were eventually sealed in the Jordan River Temple. They celebrated their marriage of 60 years before Stu’s passing in 2016.
Lee supported Stu’s dreams of boarding and racing horses. Together, they built a barn in Sandy, Utah, and later built their home of 50 years on the same property. The barn became the beginning of S Bar S Stables, where, for more than 30 years, they boarded horses and taught many wonderful young men and women the value of hard work and a love for animals.
Lee also discovered a passion for quilting and formed many cherished friendships through her quilting and book clubs. She was often the first to say, “Let’s go to lunch,” and she always made time to play with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lee devoted herself to serving others throughout her life. She volunteered as a candy striper at Cottonwood Hospital, cared for aging family members in her home, and made quilts to benefit Primary Children’s Hospital. She and Stu especially enjoyed volunteering together at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Family was Lee’s greatest joy. She treasured creating memories with those she loved, especially at her favorite vacation destinations: Bear Lake, Lake Powell, and Kauai.
Lee is survived by two of her three children, Terry (Russell) and Steven (Buffy); six grandchildren, Brandee (Jeremy), Jordan (Savanah), Connor, Colton, Sierra (Payten), and Destinee (Clayton); three great-grandchildren, Maddisyn, Fritz, and Xander; and honorary family members Tricia (Desmond), Kaleb (Elizabeth), Hobbes, and Marissa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stu; her parents; and her son, Jack.
Friends may call on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South). Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Alta View Stake Center, 1050 East 10600 South in Sandy, with a viewing one hour prior at the church. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens. Online condolences are welcome at www.larkincares.com.
