Vilate passed away peacefully at the University of Utah Hospital on June 18, 2026. She was born in Millcreek, Utah to Albert Eastwood and Elva Morgan Eastwood. When she was one years old, her mother died and she was raised by her maternal grandmother Caddie Caroline Hymas Morgan who lived in Liberty, Idaho near Bear Lake. Vilate graduated in 1942 from Fielding High School, in Paris, Idaho. She would visit her sister, Mona Eastwood, in Hunter (now West Valley City), Utah and that is where she met Elmer Brigham Jones whom she married February 29, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Their first child Richard was born in Salt Lake City and soon after the family moved to Monticello, Utah. Elmer dry farmed the Jones family land, ranched, and operated heavy equipment. During their time in Monticello, they welcomed three additional children into their family: Linda, Brent and Annette. In 1960, Elmer and Vilate returned to the Salt Lake Valley with their family, where they purchased a home in Sandy, Utah. In 1963 they moved to Salt Lake’s East Bench. Vilate worked for 25 years and retired from O.C. Tanner Jewelry Company in 1989.
Vilate served in many church callings and served a mission with her sweetheart Elmer from 1989-90 in the Hartford Connecticut Mission. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for 31 years and was involved with her husband in The National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and The U.S. Mormon Battalion. She and her husband served as temple workers in the Salt Lake Temple.
She is survived by her 4 children: Richard (Claudia) Jones, Linda (Jerry) Miller, Brent (Rhonda) Jones, Annette (Morrie) Dunham; 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held June 24, 2026 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn 2350 E. 1300 S. SLC, UT. Funeral services will be held June 25, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Wasatch Ward building, 1933 South 2100 East, SLC, UT. Friends may visit 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to the funeral. Burial at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Dr.
