William (Bill) Sherwood

December 6, 1938•October 14, 2026

William (Bill) Edward Sherwood, 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Bill was born on December 6,1938, in Glendale, California. As a toddler, Bill moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he had an adventurous childhood, the stories of which entertained his posterity. Bill and Nancy are both proud alumni of South High School graduating in 1957. Bill went on to attend and graduate from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in 1962. Bill was a dedicated fan of the University of Utah Football team. He held season tickets for many years, and on game days he could often be heard singing “A Utah Man am I” or found engaging in friendly rivalries with his neighbors.

Bill joined the Utah National Guard at age 17. He served in the first class of the 19th Special Forces Airborne Unit and retired after 27 years having attained the rank of Major.

Bill had an extraordinarily strong work ethic. Starting at 14 years old, he helped his parents run their motel in Salt Lake City. After graduating from the university, he was a manager for Sears, Roebuck and Co., part-owner of ParkWest Ski Resort, and then owner and manager of Lynn Hansen Scaffolding Company where he worked for over 30 years. During that time, he taught his kids the importance of a strong work ethic, and he always had a job for the neighborhood kids wanting to earn money.

Bill met his sweetheart, Nancy Louise Millward, in high school. They were married on January 02, 1959, at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada and were later sealed together and to their four children in the Salt Lake Temple on October 15, 1976.

Bill loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. He served faithfully in many callings including Bishop of the East Millcreek 6th Ward. He loved this calling and the many wonderful people he served. Bill and Nancy served a part-time mission in the Inner City area of Salt Lake City, Utah, a full-time mission in the Georgia, Atlanta North East Mission, and as volunteers in Palmyra, New York. Bill was an active member of his community. Aside from supporting many community-based activities, he was also a Chaplin for the Salt Lake City Police Department for 12 years.

Family was most important to Bill and Nancy. They dedicated time to build strong relationships with their kids, grandchildren, extended family and friends. He loved to travel with his wife Nancy, with their family and with dear friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Miller Sherwood and Dorothy Margaret Millette, his stepfather, Vern Lynn Hansen, and his brother, Joseph Millette Sherwood.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Millward Sherwood; his children, Teri (Doug) Lyman, Randy (Melissa) Sherwood, Julie (Joe) Harris, Steven (Erika) Sherwood; his 22 grandchildren; and his 14 great-grandchildren.
