  • Lorraine Goodfellow Young passed away May 24, 2020, after months of fighting health battles.

She was born Leah Lorraine Goodfellow on July 23, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah at St. Marks Hospital, daughter of Clifford and Leah Goodfellow. She was born minutes before her identical twin sister, Elaine Goodfellow Smith. She had four other siblings (Norman, Ludeen, Hal and Nola Gay).

Lorraine was beautiful inside and out. Growing up she was Queen of Bountiful and Miss Mecury Vapor Lights. She graduated from Davis High School and went to college at the University of Utah. She loved learning, particularly reading and math. Lorraine married the love of her life Kay Wright Young on December 27, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple.

She was always on the move and an incredibly hard worker, getting more done in a day than most of us get done in a week. She had numerous jobs from the time she was eight years old and was recruited by Mountain Bell while in college. Lorraine’s 35 years at the phone company was very successful, holding a number of positions, including high-level management. Once retired, she volunteered at LDS Hospital for over 25 years, serving on the volunteer board in several positions, including president. Throughout her life, she held a number of callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2014 she married Don Riley.

She loved to travel and went all over the world throughout the years with Elaine—once visiting 11 countries in a month. She was an amazing host, cook and baker. Lorraine was immaculate in her own appearance—she and her home were always elegant and perfectly put together. She was very organized and knew how to make any occasion special. Lorraine was very giving of her time and resources. She loved her family and grandkids and made everyone feel special, loved and supported.

Lorraine is survived by her twin sister, Elaine Smith (Douglas); her three children, Brian Young (Judy), Julie Young Gunnell (Lyle); Kevin Young (Deborah); 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Her husband of nearly 50 years, Kay Young, passed away 21 years ago.
