  • Fred Bromley Hodson, 86, passed away peacefully in Draper, Utah on February 13, 2022. He was born June 23, 1935, to William Martell Hodson and Rose Bromley in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the second of five children. He grew up in the Avenues area and graduated from East High School.

Fred married Elizabeth Lindsay Burton on December 18, 1959, in the Salt Lake Temple (divorced 1986). On June 25, 1988, he was sealed to Donna Rae Dymock. They served a mission together in Bangkok, Thailand from 1992-94.

Fred earned a BS degree in Genetics and an MBA at the University of Utah. From 1952-1962, he served in the Army Reserve. Professional pursuits included teaching, working as a computer analyst and systems designer, finance and investments, and property management. Fred and his family loved their 10 years living in northern California while he worked for Bank of America in San Francisco.

God and family were most important to him. He was a dedicated and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From 1955-1957, he served in the West Central States Mission.

Fred and Elizabeth had seven children and emphasized family time, Family Home Evenings, family vacations, holidays, and special events. For a few years, they were also foster parents to Stephanie Baldwin and Wilford Wauneka. His marriage to Donna expanded the family by three children and a growing number of grandchildren.

He took pride in always remembering birthdays and anniversaries. He made hundreds of personalized cards for family and friends. He loved to plan trips and travel, including a one-on-one trip with each of his children when they were young.

He was an avid family history enthusiast, spending countless hours researching family lines. He visited ancestral villages, churches, and cemeteries in search of genealogical information. Books were a big part of his life. He had a great love for the classics, religious books, and the scriptures. This love for gospel study led to a job as a substitute Seminary teacher for 20 years.

Fred always loved to cook, even at an early age. He was a connoisseur of good food and studied to become a true gourmet. Presentation was his forte.

He played the piano well and had a desire to instill in his children an interest in music. Each child had the opportunity to study piano and at least one other instrument. His artistic tastes extended beyond music. He also enjoyed concerts and the theatre, as well as fine art and sculpture and acquired many pieces to display in his home.

Quality was paramount. This showed in his homes as he worked to add elegant touches. He would install moulding and wallpaper, build railings, and decorate tastefully to create a refined environment.

Another hobby was making home movies. He would not only chronicle family events and trips, but also create and edit fun short films. Favorites in the family are The Paper Route, Lawn Racing, and The Tonsillectomy.

For the last years of his life, Fred dealt with the debilitating mental and physical challenges of Parkinson’s Disease. He worked hard to mitigate the symptoms with exercise and a cheerful attitude. Caretakers and those around him often commented on how sweet he was and how much they loved him.

Fred is survived by: children Michael, Elaine (Gordon) Erickson, Nathan (Lisa), Gaylianne, Carolyn (Shane) Jensen, Stephen (Patricia), Rachel (David) Inkley; stepchildren Michael (Kim - deceased) Babbel, David (Cathy) Babbel, and Lisa Babbel; brother Grant (Jewel), and sister Jane (Steve Marsh - deceased).

He was proud of his 29 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna, brother William “Bill,” sister Barbara (Non) Merrill, granddaughter Jessica, and grandson Paul.

I'm going to miss uncle Fred. I'll never forget when he invited me over to learn to cook fried ice cream! We had a wonderful time. I learned so much about him here. I wish we spent more time together.
