Howard Gurr McQuarrie M.D.

1929 ~ 2021

Howard was born the fourth and youngest child of Laura Gurr and Lamond Seegmiller McQuarrie on November 8th, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His siblings, John Graham, Lamond Gurr, and Miriam preceded Howard in death.

After rotating through Emerson Elementary, Irving Junior High, and East High School, he attended the University of Utah for premedical training. He affiliated with Sigma Nu Fraternity. In 1951 he entered the George Washington University School of Medicine receiving his Doctor of Medicine in 1955. He interned at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City and continued his Specialty Training at George Washington University Hospital and District of Columbia Hospital in Washington, D.C. Fellowship at National Institute of Cancer, Washington, D.C.

Howard served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force, Lackland Air Force Hospital, San Antonino, Texas.

Following his military service, Howard became a diplomat of the Board of Obstetrics, and Gynecology and established a memorable and rewarding practice in Salt Lake City from 1961 to 1995. He was inducted into many specialty societies including American College of OB-GYN, The Continental Gynecological Society (President), International Gynecologic Society, Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pacific Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Utah Medical Association (President), Salt Lake Surgical Society, Pacific Coast Infertility Society, International Society for the Study of Humanism in Medicine (President), Federation of State Medical Boards (President), Utah Physicians Licensing Board for two terms of appointment (Chairman), AMA Medical Review, recipient of Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Robert Raszkowski, M.D., PhD. Hero Award. Following his practice years, Howard Served as Medical Director of Public Employees Health Plan until retirement in 2005. Howard contributed to his profession through research, articles, and presentations.

Howard married Pamela Anderson in Salt Lake City on June 23, 1956. This union produced a prideful family of four sons and eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Craig Steven (Polly) and daughters, Madeline (Erich Scholz) and their children Chloe and Parker Kyle, and Carly (Sheldon Goodwin), Michael Lamond (Diane) and his son, Kyle (deceased), Matthew Scott (Andreja) and their son, Tilen and daughter, Nina; Andrew Howard (Lisa) and their daughters, Olivia, and Sabrina, and son Maximus. The family has fond memories of extensive travels, family gatherings, outings which included skiing, fishing, hunting, tennis and golf. Howard enjoyed memberships in the Salt Lake Country Club, Alta Club, and Cottonwood Club.

In Howard’s words: This is a time to live fully, happily, and memorably. And, there is a time to die. It has been a wonderful life thanks to Pam, our special sons, their families, and the friends who have enriched my life.

A private graveside service will be held at a future date for the inurnment at Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
