Mark Horne Lundgren

1955 ~ 2021

Mark Horne Lundgren ended his brave battle with cancer on November 28, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was our hero and our North Star, and we’ll forever be lost without him.

Mark was born on a bright Saturday on March 26, 1955 to Allen Henry and Ruth Horne Lundgren. Mark grew up in the Yalecrest neighborhood, graduated from East High School, and raised his daughters in Sugarhouse. Mark loved Salt Lake City and knew every square mile of it by heart. Decades ahead of his time, Mark recognized that all people have a right to access safe and secure shelter, and he dedicated his entire professional career to promoting and providing affordable housing options for people throughout Utah, and founded Utah Resident Owned Communities.

Mark loved all kinds of music, San Francisco, his family cabin in Lamb’s Canyon, fresh shellfish, the Grand Tetons, Christmas, his Swedish heritage, and many lucky and loyal dogs. Mark married his best friend, and loved spending time with his wife and daughters above all else. An original environmentalist, Mark always sought to leave the earth better than he found it, and there isn’t a soul who knew him who isn’t better for it.

Mark is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters, Ilsa Lundgren Snyder (Aaron), Tara Lundgren; sibling, Virginia Bywater (Doug); sister-in-law, Andrea Alcabes; and grandchildren, Allen Snyder, Cash Lundgren, and Harold Gagliardi. Mark is preceded in death by his brother Howard Lundgren; mother, Ruth Horne Lundgren; and father, Allen H. Lundgren.

“Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell.”

Guestbook/Condolences

Nancy - My most sincere condolences to you and your family. Mark was genuinely nice person with a big heart. He and I had a lot of good times and hearty laughs, particularly in Telluride for the infamous harmonic convergence. A great time there, actually. He will be truly missed. Kindest regards, Dave

I met Mark in kindergarten. We grew up together, swam together, did naughty things together (his mom blamed me for being a bad influence).
My parents gave me a guitar (remember Green Strike Stamps?). Mark and I would occasionally play together. He turned me on to Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon, Lead Belly, Flat and Scruggs, Doc Watson...to name a few.
I left at high schools almost end. We connected occasionally afterwards.

Mark had compassion and interest in affordable housing for everyone that I've never seen in any other individual. Purpose and conviction, music and love...these will continue to be my lasting lessons I learned from knowing Mark.

Good bye for know old friend.
