Robert Glen Mitchell, M.D.

1931 ~ 2021

Robert Glen Mitchell, MD, age 90, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed from complications incident to age on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021. Born on November 30, 1931, the son of Raymond Glen Mitchell and Mildred Pace Mitchell, he was raised in Burley, Idaho.

“Bob” graduated from the University of Idaho, and in 1958, from the University of Washington School of Medicine. He married Marcia M. Keller, MD, in 1957. Following an internship in Philadelphia, he served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in Nuremberg, Germany.

He returned with his family to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he completed a residency in Radiology at the University of Utah, and served on the medical staff; followed by years of private practice at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.

Bob loved the outdoors! He was an avid hiker, cross country skier and cyclist, and was a member of the Wasatch Mountain Club. He also loved hunting, particularly waterfowl, and was a member of the Chesapeake Duck Club. He provided moose, elk and antelope for the family dinner table. He climbed numerous peaks on several continents, including Mont Blanc, Mount Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua in South America, Mount McKinley and Mount Everest. He also loved sailing, owning his own sailboat. A local snow shoeing adventure, along with some of his longtime hiking friends, even lead to an eventful encounter being treed by a moose. He loved photography and painting. He attempted to master many things that caught his interest.

He loved sharing the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. His favorite haven was their cabin at Brighton, Utah. It was the perfect place for a nighttime cross country skiing adventure under a full moon. He loved sharing it with his family, making breakfast with his special recipe buckwheat pancakes. He also appreciated a nice car, owning an MGA while living in Germany, and multiple Datsun Z cars.

Bob was an active participant in the Huntsman Senior Games well into his eighties, where he amassed innumerable gold medals in cycling and running.
Even at age 90, he continued his daily walk.

Bob took each of his children on a once in a lifetime trip: Stan sailing in the Virgin Islands, Connie biking in Ireland, and Jenifer biking in New Zealand.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marcia Keller Mitchell, MD, son Stanley G. Mitchell, and daughters Connie Mitchell Vail, MD (Michael A.), and Jenifer Lewandowski (Jay), nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, sisters Joan Call, Marilyn Koyle (Dean), Linda Monk, and brother Gary Mitchell. Preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Mitchell and brother James P. Mitchell.
