Marion Samuel Wittwer

1929 ~ 2017

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Marion Samuel Wittwer, passed away on February 23, 2017 at the age of 87. He died of causes incident to age and was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. Our dear Dad was known for his eternal devotion to his loving wife Audrey, for his stalwart testimony of our Savior, for his unbending integrity and his determined work ethic. Through his tireless example, he taught us how to live, love, care and serve. As his children and posterity, all we want is to emulate that example and live as he lived.

Marion was born on March 3, 1929 in St. George, Utah to his parents Winona Agnes Earl and William Wittwer. He lost his father when he was just 12 years old and determined that he would live up to his father's legacy of honesty and integrity. He cared for his mother while they lived together in St. George during his school years. He later attended and graduated from Brigham Young University where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Audrey. They met when Marion played the drums for a band that accompanied the dance group in which Audrey performed.

Marion loved his family, gospel study, music, gardening, reading, and temple service. He served as an officer in the armed forces during the Korean conflict. He worked as a legislative analyst in both federal and state government and, when he retired, he was honored by the Utah State government for his exemplary service. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served as a missionary in the Texas Louisiana mission, and served in many other church roles including high priest group leader, high councilor, and bishop. Later in life, he loved serving in the Salt Lake Temple for 12 years.

He will be missed by his wife Audrey Lucille Haycock Wittwer, his children Laurie (Art) Johnson, Bradley (Julie) Wittwer, Elaine (Kelly) Klindt, Julia (Richard) Orr, and Jared (Leslie) Wittwer, 24 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by brothers Karl (Mable), William, and Neil, sister Viola (Boyd) Squires and daughter-in-law Emily Nelson (Bradley) Wittwer.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3, at 12 noon at the Eighteenth North Ward, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City. Visitation will be Thursday, March 2 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East, South Temple, Salt Lake City and at 10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the church on March 3. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Dr. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the missionary fund of the LDS Church.
