Karen Larsen Andrew Miles, age 79 of El Dorado, California died unexpectedly October 20, 2017 in her home. Born July 10, 1938 in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of the late Rex Farrell Larsen and Katherine Fernelius Larsen. She is survived by her husband of 14 years, Duane Miles; six sons, Jonathan Andrew of Rocklin, CA; Craig (Karen) Andrew of Mansfield, OH; Bruce (Meg) Andrew of Fredericksburg, VA; Taylor (Taudine) Andrew of Citrus Heights, CA; Reed (Amy) Andrew of Baraboo, WI; and Whitney (Kara) Andrew of Nashville, TN; Twenty-one grandchildren; Two great-grandchildren; Three brothers, Farrell of Escondido, CA, Bradley of Bountiful, UT, and Spencer of Bountiful, UT; One sister, Elaine of Elk Ridge,UT. She is predeceased by her sister, Lynette. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, step grandchildren, and by her former husband, Reed C. Andrew of Portage, WI. Also surviving are her stepchildren, Duane (Teri) Miles of Mendon, UT; Sanford (Shelley) Miles of Malad, ID; Cindy (Shannon) Sager of Payson, UT; Sue Anderson of Heber, UT; and Marcy (David) Jackson of Austin, TX.
Karen loved the out-of-doors, reading good literature, listening to classical music, attending live opera, researching genealogy, and learning. She attended Brigham Young University from 1956-57, San Jose State University from 1958-59, UC-Berkeley from 1959-60, then as a full-time mother, resumed her education part time at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay in 1978 where she obtained her BA in English in 1983. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where she obtained a MS in Library Science in 1985. After the completion of her MS degree, Karen returned to her beloved California where she volunteered and worked part time as a librarian at various libraries in the Sacramento area. She obtained full time employment at the Roseville Public Library, and loved working there for nearly fifteen years until her retirement in 2003. She worked as a volunteer at the El Dorado Family History Center and Library in Placerville where her educational expertise and experience as a professional librarian were invaluable to patrons and co-workers. Karen was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) where she served as Recording Secretary on the El Dorado Company Board since May of 2013. Karen was a member of the Diamond Springs Ward (local congregation) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous church positions throughout her life. Of all her education, accomplishments, and career achievements, Karen would say what brought her the greatest satisfaction was raising her six sons. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews. She was also an accomplished seamstress and a fantastic cook. All her sons agree that they have never tasted better pie than one baked by Karen.
Memorial services will be this Saturday, October 28 at 12:00 p.m. PDT at the LDS chapel at 3275 Cedar Ravine Road, Placerville, California. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. MST at the LDS chapel at 1320 East 1975 South, Bountiful, Utah. Graveside service and burial to take place November 11 at 3:00 p.m. MST at the Malad City Cemetery, Malad, Idaho.
