Alfred Lloyd Peterson, known as Lloyd, peacefully passed away at the age of 89 into the arms of a loving Heavenly Father on September 29, 2024. He is now reunited with the love of his life, Marjorie, who preceded him in death earlier this year. Lloyd will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a loving son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with his posterity numbering 91. Known for his big heart, he served and cared for everyone he met. Lloyd was a kind, forgiving, faithful, and hardworking man known for his sense of humor and generosity. “He would give you the shirt off his back,” was a reflection of how he lived his life.
Lloyd was born on March 8, 1935 to Alfred Christian Peterson and Wanda Unck in Ogden, Utah. He was the second of four children in the family, Wanda Clair, himself, Marylyn, and Donald Walter.
He met Marjorie while in high school on a double date with mutual friends, and it didn’t take long to realize they were destined to be together for life. After graduation, they married in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on September 24, 1954. Their marriage blessed them with five children; Aaron, Scott, Craig, Brad, and Lynette. Together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage. During this time, he served with the Air National Guard in the 191st Fighter Squadron as an Airman 1st Class from 1953-1958.
Lloyd valued family time above all else. Many of his happiest years were spent traveling and camping at “the property”. This was not your typical camping-this was camping in style, complete with the comforts of home. He loved deer hunting with family and friends, making each outing a time of fun and connection. He hunted most of his life and shared this activity with us. Motorcycles and four-wheelers brought endless joy to the family, especially the kids and grandkids.
Lloyd took joy in simpler pleasures. Watching football and basketball were favorite pastimes that he and Marjorie enjoyed together, but the Utah Jazz was his favorite.
He served many callings as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a scoutmaster and a counselor in the bishopric. Several times he and Marjorie were activity chairman, planning activities and ward parties, this was something they enjoyed very much. He was a salesman by trade, both in owning his own business and as a real estate broker. He achieved the Million Dollar Club, because he is so friendly and easy to be around.
Lloyd had a special love for his horses, treated them like royalty until he had to sell them in his later years. His horses always knew when he was coming, often waiting to greet him at the fence to wrap their necks around him to hug him. They would also follow him around to be near him. He would often share a bit of his diet coke with them.
One of his greatest loves including Marjorie was restoring old cars; 1932 Ford Coupe, 1934 Ford Cabriolet with suicide doors, 1955 Chevrolet Bel Aire (Mom’s car), and a 1950 Chevrolet pickup truck. Many hours were spent along with his son Brad restoring them to better than new condition. She enjoyed them as much as he did, winning many trophies at car shows, her car took more trophies than his, which brought him great pride and happiness.
Holidays with family were incredibly important to Lloyd, and they created many cherished memories. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, and birthday gatherings were especially meaningful to him. No one went home hungry, in fact, often being sent home with leftovers was the norm. He considered the Super Bowl a holiday, he went all out with great food and company. New Year’s Eve was our annual “Shrimp Fry” and this was a special time. It didn’t matter what holiday it was as long as it was spent together as a family. When it came to meals anyone was welcome whatever time we ate whether it was 6 or 10 pm, there was always enough for all.
Dad loved food, had many favorites including carrot cake, Chinese food, pizza, homemade pickled eggs, minced meat pie at Thanksgiving, and eating at Olive Garden and Texas LongHorn steak house just to mention a few. He made the best “New York” steaks in town, a real grill master, complete with homemade barbecue sauce. His barbecued chicken ranked right up there with his steak.
He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Aaron (Connie), Scott (Linda), Craig (Carolyn), Brad (Shona), Lynette (Gordon), 33 grandchildren including spouses, and 48 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie. His parents, siblings; sister, Wanda Clair; sister, Marylyn; and brother, Don.
A special thanks to Copper Creek Assisted Living Center and the great people from Ovation Hospice for such loving care for Lloyd.
