  • Our sweet Alta Carolyn Burraston Farren, loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away on February 22, 2022, just nine days after turning 88.

Carolyn was born in Goshen, Utah, to Vern Burraston and Alta Roach. Carolyn had two brothers and one sister, who died in infancy, but she never felt like an only child because she grew up with so many cousins and friends. Carolyn graduated from Payson High in 1952 and loved hanging out with her classmates and a close group of girlfriends affectionately referred to as the “Iggly Giggly’s”.

Carolyn married John Farren in 1954 in Goshen. His work took them to Provo Utah, Idaho, and Hawaii, where she raised her three children, John Vern, JanaLyn, and Maryann. After divorcing, Carolyn moved back to Utah and enjoyed a long career at Utah Power and Light. She met many lifelong friends there and was active in the bowling and golf leagues. As these fun friends grew older, they continued to meet weekly for lunch and a game of dominoes and cards. Carolyn loved to travel and enjoyed going to Cowboy Poetry and Mystery Tours with her cousin Katherine.

Carolyn was a beautiful seamstress. While living in Hawaii, she enrolled her daughters in Hula lessons. She sewed their costumes and many of their clothes. She also made stunning gowns for Jana for Rainbow Girls. She had an eye for detail and was a stickler for high-quality work in all that she did. Her children always came first; she supported John in baseball and lacrosse, and her daughters’ dance, club, and school activities.

When hit with a cancer diagnosis six years ago, rather than quibble or pout Carolyn did what she had done with each previous challenge, faced it head-on with a great attitude, doing everything possible to get better and learn from the experience. Her Doctors, Nurses and caregivers loved caring for her because she was so positive. She loved being active and walking, cleaning her house, organizing, and singing. A favorite childhood memory is our mother waking us up to her singing, “Good Morning to you” and “It’s a beautiful day in Hawaii.” Carolyn is survived by her loving daughters, JanaLyn Johnson and Maryann (Bruce) White, daughter-in-law Danise Farren, 11 grandchildren, and 19 ½ great-grandchildren. She was reunited with her son John, and her son-in-law Brad.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Westbrook 7th Ward Chapel located at 6364 South 3200 West, Taylorsville, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment will be Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Goshen City Cemetery 10500 W 15800 S St, Goshen, UT 84633.

    Guestbook/Condolences

My mother, Connie Cardon, worked with Carolyn at UP&L who she counted as a wonderful friend. There were four women who worked and played together with memorable trips to Hawaii and a river trip in Idaho. They had many great times and supported each other with love and laugher.
My deepest condolences on your loss.

Hi Jana, I just saw this announcement and feel both sad and happy. I imagine a reunion of Carolyn and Bud has taken place, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to support you at her funeral as you were at my dad’s to support us. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
