Amie Nielsen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 15, 1972, to Robert Douglas Nielsen and Karen Cummings Nielsen.

This remarkable and accomplished woman passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024, from ovarian cancer.

Amie had a brilliant intellect and a wide variety of interests from the arts to the sciences and everything in between. Amie was a graduate of Skyline High School Class of 1991. She continued her education at Wellesley College earning a bachelor’s degree in biological chemistry.  Amie pursued her passion to help others by studying medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center. She returned to Salt Lake City in 2003 to start her professional career working in the Emergency Department at Saint Marks Hospital in Millcreek, Utah, where she worked for 19 years until her cancer diagnosis in 2022. She was greatly loved by her coworkers and was known as a jokester. She was not afraid to play pranks on them during their shifts together.

Amie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held numerous church positions many of which involved working with the young women. She went to great efforts to make each of them feel special and loved. She was a great example of someone who loved our Savior and was never hesitant to share her testimony of Him. She followed His example by loving and serving those around her that were in need.

Amie had the ability to make friends easily and developed many life-long friendships. She enjoyed doing fun activities such as boating, water and snow skiing, and running marathons. She also loved being pampered and experiencing the finer things of life.

She is the mother of three children whom she adored. Caring for her family was her top priority. Her devotion to them was unmatched. She put her heart and soul into everything she did for them including making holidays and birthdays spectacular. Amie loved watching her children play sports. A cherished family memory was their time traveling together with the 13U Grays baseball team.

Amie was a dedicated daughter who loved and honored her parents. She compassionately cared for her mother (15 years) and her father (8 years). She freely gave of her medical expertise and her time to help them through their very challenging health issues. We are comforted knowing that she is now reunited with them. We will miss you in every possible way. We love you Amie, our wonderful mother, sister and friend.

Amie was preceded in death by her parents. Survived by her children: Avery, Courtland, and Paige Bills; siblings: Robert Brent (Heather) Nielsen and Nanette Hexem.

The family wishes to thank all who helped care for Amie during her courageous battle with cancer and especially those who cared for her during her final weeks. She fought this disease with grace and dignity and handled each challenge with aplomb as she did with life challenges in general and without complaint.  She had a wry sense of humor and was able to find humor with her family in a lot of these difficult circumstances.

A viewing will take place on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens (1950 E. 10600 S. Sandy, UT 84092) and on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Mount Olympus YSA Ward (3862 E. Oakview Drive, Millcreek, UT 84124). Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will follow the funeral services at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

I met Amie at Huntsman in the infusion center. She was truly an amazing person. She gave me hope for my spouse. She motivated me to be a better person. She was my friend. She spoke with such pride of her children.
Celebrating the life of an amazing person and mourning her loss with you.

Avery, Court, and Paige,
I have loved you since you were my Sunbeams and your Mom is one of my heroes! I am so sad she has left us for a time. You are all so amazing and I hope you will feel comfort and peace as you live your lives in the way your Mom taught you. She is always in your hearts and cheering you on from Paradise. Your Savior loves you so much and will help get you through this difficult time. I am glad we had her as long as we did. She’s the best Mom you could have asked for.
Love and big hugs,
Carie Woodbury

Court, Avery and Paige,

I cherished your mother. She was a loving and inclusive person, bringing warmth and her contagious laugh to every situation. Especially fond memories include her time as cheer squad- half time entertainment leader at Court and Henry’s basketball games. She organized the team lip sync, with accompanying boom box, to a Michael Jackson song. She brought the group together in my driveway on Mother’s Day after Henry’s accident- you were there by her side, making the world a better place. You will carry on this legacy because her love will continue through you. Arms around you❤️

We are saddened by this news, although we take comfort knowing that she lived a fantastic life full of service and smiles. She clearly excelled in a wide range of activities (mother, doctor, classmate - Skyline '91, and a follower of the Savior, to name a few), and she will be missed here, but without question was welcomed beyond the veil with the words: "well done, thou good and faithful servant."

'Till we meet again, Amie. God speed.

I have loved your mom as a dear friend my whole life. She was the first friend I made moving to the Cove as an 8 year old and has been embedded in my life ever since. From sleepovers to roommates at Oakcrest and Mill Hollow, trips to Lake Powell, double dates and more… Amie was an outstanding human who has left this world a better place than she found it. I am heartbroken 💔 but know we will see each other again. Each of you are in my prayers and I hope you can find peace at this time. Your mom was an amazing woman!!!

- Court, Avery and Paige,

Amie was an inspiration. She had a warmth that instantly made you feel like you were best friends. Her love for life and her excellence will live on in her children and those who knew her. Sending love and prayers to her beautiful family.

My heart is broken, but grateful to know Amie is free from her suffering, and that we'll all be together again, eventually. Amie was probably the most genuine friend I had in high school, truly a joy to be with. She made everyone want to be better, and treat others more kindly. She was so fun. I believe she got to work at St. Mark's with my dad for a bit...she knew him when we became friends in high school, and they had the same hilarious demeanor and were both so loved by their patients. Hopefully they'll find each other up there and crack some jokes together. Prayers for Amie's family, the separation will surely be difficult. Much love to you all.

Dearest Amie,
You've shown incredible strength, courage and love for others during your illness!
Your love for your children is so evident. Your fight, your love, and the life you've built will continue to inspire them every day. Please know that they will always carry a piece of you with them in their hearts, and the love you’ve shared will guide them as they grow.
Thank you for being such a great example to me of what a strong woman should be!
Your acts of kindness to our family will always be remembered!
We love you and we will keep your beautiful family in our prayers!! XO

Amie was an inspiration! As one of the young women she served, I watched her prioritize and plan elaborate activities because she wanted us to have fun. We didn’t know how much she was balancing at home and work because she was always present. Our relationship lasted way beyond my time in young women’s as I truly grew to understand what an amazing woman she was. Amie you are so loved, I will continue cheering on our North Carolina teams in your honor! Xox

Today’s services were beautiful, poignant, and inspiring. Amie is truly an extraordinary soul. It has been a great privilege of my life to know her. As I’ve envisioned Amie’s reunion with her parents, I’m utterly convinced that it was filled with joy and laughter—lots of laughter! Amie fought the good fight. She finished the course. She kept the faith. She passed every test, and hazard, and peril with dignity, strength, kindness, and love. And while it is true that I am “trying to be like Jesus,” it is no less true that it would be a high honor to even approach being like Amie.
