Arthur Edward Sipes, affectionately known as “Art“ or “Sniper” passed away on September 3, 2024, at the age of 77, after a valiant battle with Leukemia. Born on December 11, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Art spent his last years in Sandy and South Jordan, Utah, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones.
A dedicated service member, Art proudly served 22 years in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam, and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant E7. Throughout his military career he received several awards and honors for meritorious service, including the Bronze Star Medal. He was a devoted veteran, and his military service was one of his proudest accomplishments.
Art was a loving husband to Janice H. Sipes for 35 wonderful years. Together, they blended a family that included five children; Charles (Lori) Sipes, Marsha Nieminski, Arthur Edward Jr. "AJ", Jenni (John) Trentman, and Darrin (Mindy) Sipes. He cherished the role of grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In recent years, Art was overjoyed to meet three half siblings living in Pennsylvania, Sharon Yarnell, Sandy Phieffer and Edward Sipes forging loving relationships that brought him tremendous happiness.
Art was known for his love of the outdoors, often enjoying long scenic drives with his sweetheart, mountain ATV rides, camping with his family, and deer hunting with his son's. His inquisitive nature meant that he never met a stranger he didn't have a question for. In his retirement years, he served as the local chapter president of The Good Sam Club "The Trail Dusters" where he made many lasting friendships.
Faith was an integral part of Art's life as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint's. He held a strong testimony of our Heavenly Father, which guided him throughout his life.
Art is survived by his loving wife, Janice; his children and their families; his twin sister Carol McIlrath; and siblings Karen Richardson, Byron Baker, Randy Baker, and Dennis Baker. He was preceded in death by his infant son Jeremy, his parents Wallace and Ivy Baker, his brother Matthew Baker, and an infant Grandson.
Art will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, warmth, and the love he shared with his family and friends. As he would often say, "That'll be $92.50,please!" – a reminder of his unique sense of humor that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Art's family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care provided to him by the clinicians and caretakers at the Salt Lake Veteran Administration Hospital (AMU unit) and Refine Hospice Care.
A viewing will be held at Larkin Memorial Sunset Gardens (1950 E. 10600 S. Sandy, Utah) on Wednesday, September 11 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at the same location on Thursday, September 12 at 2:00 PM, with a viewing held at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to a charity of your choice in Art’s name.

Our deepest condolences to the family. After searching for many years I finally found Art and his family.
We spent a week together getting to know each other and our families. He had a good sense of humor and he would laugh when I would call and say it is your crazy younger sister. Only having a short time with him I will miss him dearly.
May God give comfort to his family and I know Art is with the Lord resting peacefully.
Love, Sharn and John
Wishing you all peace and comfort.
His suffering here is gone.
May you remember the positive memories you each eventually found with him.
Oh my goodness. I didn’t know he passed. I was going through the process of my Mom passing away. She passed September 9, 2024. I was so sad to hear about Art. I just loved you guys. Take care. Loralee
