A Celebration of Life will be held this summer in the Cottonwood canyons

Our beloved dreamer and optimist, Arthur Hughes “Bub” Horne passed away peacefully at home early in the morning of 4/19/2024 with his children at his side.

Bub was born on February 26, 1952, in Bartlesville, OK to Sara Beth Hughes and Rex Eugene Horne. He was their third child and only boy, given the family name Arthur, then promptly dubbed “a cute little bub” by his maternal grandfather Arthur M. Hughes. “Bub” stuck because it suited the red-headed brother’s carefree, whimsical personality, and his open heart.

Bub loved people and was as comfortable with the elite as with the unhoused. If you were a friend of Bub, he would give you the shirt off his back as he cited the benefactor who gave him the shirt as another dear friend. Bub met every person, no matter their status, with compassion and a good story. He’d admit he wasn’t always graceful, but he cared.

Bub was a passionate chef, environmentalist, fundraiser, teacher, inventor, and learner. He enjoyed many hobbies including cooking, skiing, and sailboats. He was an avid sci-fi reader and author, plant medicine proponent, tinkerer, trout farmer, cyclist, E-bike vendor, bio-diesel Mercedes devotee, chef-educator, and the life of any party.

Bub graduated from East High School (SLC, UT) in 1970, and married Rebecca Ann Bullough on St Patrick’s Day 1975 at The Cathedral of St Mark in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in 1976. His memories of the Culinary Institute are among the liveliest stories he shared. Following their Manhattan adventure, Bub and Rebecca returned to Salt Lake in 1978, anticipating the birth of their daughter Antonia.

Bub’s proudest professional achievement was Liaison, his farm-to-table restaurant that operated from 1982 to 1989 in the Foothill neighborhood of SLC. He and Rebecca ran the restaurant together, with the help of an unforgettable staff. Antonia spent many afternoons at Liaison watching the kitchen from atop a refrigerator. After Liaison closed, Bub was the chef at the Spencer S. Eccles Executive Dining Room at First Security Bank for close to a decade.

Bub and Rebecca’s son Logan was born in 1991. Shortly after, Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought a long and hard battle with the disease. To be more available to his family, Bub transitioned from the stove top to a more conventional job in food and equipment sales. He found meaning in fundraising for causes he held dear. He was a dedicated volunteer chef in Cowboys Against Cancer, The Chef And The Child, Utahns Against Hunger, and a variety of other causes. Bub was never self-pitying, and he never lost sight of those less fortunate than he.

Bub is preceded in death by his wife Rebecca Bullough Horne (d. 1998) and nephew Paul (Amy) Pham. He is survived by his children Logan Horne (Mattie Casey), Antonia Horne (Jon Oliver), and his sisters Madaline DeSmet, Margaret (Greg) Bown, Ruth Horne (Chris Sieverts), Thuy (Phil) Pham, and nieces/nephews Yvette (Mike) Smith; Patricia Giumini; John (Hollie) DeSmet; Patrick Pham; Tyler Pham. He is also survived by Rebecca’s mother Dolores Bullough and siblings Bob, Patricia, and Richard, and their families.

A celebration of life will be held this summer in the Cottonwood canyons. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Bub’s name to Utah Physicians for A Healthy Environment (UPHE.org)

Bub was such an incredible character; I loved seeing him come into clinic for care. He was essentially the highlight of the day! No matter what curveball was thrown at him health wise, he showcased the upmost attitude one person could ever have. He taught me things about cooking and sailing, his tinkering, and most importantly what it means to see the joys of life. I remember him talking fondly of his late wife and I hope they are sharing the biggest embrace. Rest in peaceful peace, it was an honor to have provided you care and company in your final months. You will be deeply missed, Bub.

Logan and family, I’m just heartbroken to have read this about your father! Bud was an amazing man and his spirit and drive for finding the good in all still lives with me. From the first time I met “Chef” with the Buffalo BBQ, I knew I was going to be friends for life. His drive for perfection and knowledge of fine cuisine will be with me always. We were good friends and connected on so many levels. I’m proud that we crossed paths in our journey and I’m blessed to call him my friend! I send my love to you and your family, and I know his children did him proud! You are blessed ! Jane

Antonia and Logan, I am so very, very sorry to hear about the loss of your dad and sorry I missed his celebration of life. He certainly lived a life that needed celebrating. As you know he was an eternal optimist and could always calm me when times got crazy. I was very glad and proud to have him on our Cowboys Against Cancer team for so many years. I love that man and will miss him greatly.

We should have left this life before Bub. Hard to acknowledge he is gone. Lovely memories of his fine cuisine, but more of his humanity. Flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest, dear Bub.
