Bill Marcovecchio, retired vegetable farmer and businessman, was born in Murray, Utah on March 22, 1933, and passed away at home on May 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with a terminal illness. His unwavering Catholic faith remained a central part of his life until the very end. As he faced the final moments of his journey, his last words were a compassionate testimony to his faith in God.
Bill's love for his family was as perennial as the crops he tenderly nurtured. His marriage to Carolyn was a beacon of enduring love, a partnership that flourished through seven decades of shared dreams and challenges. Their children, Michael, Marie (Joseph), and Paula (Peyton), along with their many grandchildren and great grandchildren were the fruits of this lifelong union, each adding a unique vibrancy to the Marcovecchio family tapestry. Born third to Joe and Sarah (Falsone), he soon joined the family farm alongside his brother Joe (Patricia) and sister Rosemary (Carl Vaccaro) and is preceded in death by his parents, and brother.
Bill’s life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and love for his family. As he grew, so did his passion for farming. The vast expanse of land he and his siblings, and family cultivated, at times neared 400 acres and included romaine, red and green leaf, sweet corn, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, and pumpkins on Greenbriar Farms, (Draper) became a canvas to enable his other aspirations: Golfing, picnics in the mountains, cooking, walking his dog, being neighborly, and tending to their beautiful flowers, and let's not forget their pretty white Christmas lights!
Bill’s impact extended beyond the fields. His expertise in irrigation water management made him a respected figure in Utah. He served in many positions on the board for the East Jordan Irrigation Company for over 60 years. Eventually becoming the president, Bill and his advisors along with his son, assured that water flowed efficiently to sustain crops and communities. The canals and systems he helped maintain were and still are vital to the region’s prosperity.
His passion for water extended beyond the farm gates. Bill's appointment to the Board of Water Resources under Governor Levitt showcased his commitment to public service. From May 1997 to March 2005, he championed water rights, improvements, conservation, and equitable distribution.
Bill actively contributed to his church community. He served as a Sacristan, ensuring the smooth functioning of religious ceremonies. His involvement extended to the parish council, where he participated in decision-making and community-building efforts. Additionally, he lent his expertise to several capital campaign committees, working tirelessly to construct beautiful churches that would serve as places of worship and reflection.
One of Bill’s enduring legacies was his vision for the Skaggs Catholic Center. He saw it not only as a physical space but as a celebration of beauty and Christ. Importantly, he also prioritized the safety of children and pedestrians on campus, emphasizing intentional measures to protect them.
He was not only a dedicated vegetable farmer but also a pillar of strength for those who knew him. He served stateside as an Agriculture Inspector in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged. His legacy will continue through the memories shared by family, friends, his parish and the community.
Please join us in remembering Bill and celebrating the impact he had on our lives. His spirit will forever echo through the fields he tended and the hearts he touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon on June 13, 2024, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 300 East 11800 South, Draper UT. Family and friends are invited to call at 10:30 AM. Rosary Service begins at 11:30 AM. The Rite of Committal follows at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

We were at the Arthrofit Gym class today and I was speaking to another member. I told her about Bill and wondered how he was doing. Later, she had me come and see that Bill's Obituary was posted there!
She remembered him well and his kindness. I also remember him and how he always reminded my name and asked "How are things on Spruce Street?". He was a very sweet and kind man! Paul and I sent our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family! (Your neighbors on Spruce Street).
