Carla Pitcher graced this planet on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, June 6, 1971. From the start, Carla displayed an unwavering spirit of curiosity. As a bright and inquisitive child, she always sought new knowledge and embarked on thrilling adventures.
Carla's academic journey was marked by remarkable success. In high school, while immersed in advanced placement classes, she encountered a PE requirement. Rather than settling for a typical PE class, Carla fearlessly appealed to the administration, advocating for the study of Latin in its place. The school did not offer Latin, but determined and resourceful, Carla created her own Latin curriculum, complete with a syllabus and lesson plans. This was a testament to her unyielding commitment to shaping her own path. Carla graduated with honors from Taylorsville High School and secured an Honors at Entrance full scholarship to the University of Utah.
Prior to commencing her studies at the UofU, Carla had planned a grand trip to Europe with a friend. When unforeseen circumstances prevented her friend from joining, Carla fearlessly forged ahead, eventually embarking on the adventure solo. In Europe, Florence, Italy captured her heart, becoming her cherished city abroad. Such was Carla's life—a testament to living on her own terms, driven by her own motivations.
Carla's pursuit of knowledge extended beyond the UofU. She also studied at BYU and Westminster, earning her bachelor’s degree in biology. Throughout her life, Carla held a diverse range of jobs, from working in a jewelry boutique in her younger years to conducting research in labs.
Carla's love extended to mentoring her nieces, nephews, friends, and even strangers. Her volunteer work with the UofU’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education focused on encouraging young girls to explore math and science and to pursue careers in these fields.
In her late 20s, Carla married Stefan Nicholas Tevis. They were married for eight years and in that time together, they welcomed two remarkable sons, Christian Nicholas and Gabriel Stefan. Her children became Carla's greatest achievement, the focus of her passion, and a source of immense pride. She prepared them diligently, not only for her recent passing but also for the journey of life itself. Christian and Gabriel are her enduring legacy, and their lives will forever honor her memory as they forge their own paths.
Carla passed away peacefully in the quiet hours of the morning on May 12, 2023, from pancreatic cancer, which she endured with grace and style. Carla is survived by her loving parents, Rexine Blaser Pitcher (mother) and John C. Pitcher (father), Linda Afton Pitcher (father’s spouse), brother Aaron J. Pitcher, brother Bryan B. Pitcher and Charles E. Turner (brother-in-law), her sister Nicole Pitcher Monsen and Richard O. Monsen (brother-in-law), and sister Brooke P. Denton. In addition to her two sons, Carla also leaves behind a beloved group of nieces and nephews. She was a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Larkin Mortuary, located at 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Family visitation will commence at 1 PM, followed by the memorial service at 2 PM. For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be streamed online; click the "Watch Services" button above. Floral tributes may be sent directly to Larkin Mortuary at the same address.
Guestbook/Condolences
I am so sorry to hear of Carla’s passing. She and I were good friends during our sophomore and junior years of high school. I have so many fun memories from that time, all because of her. From her first car (I think she named it Lola?) to her driving the family van with her leg so both hands could be free for hair care, Carla made the school days tolerable. She talked me into dressing up as Attila the Hun? for a student government assembly and talked me into dressing up as a classmate’s mother to ask him to the Sadie Hawkins dance for her. Come to think of it, I got talked into a lot of stuff because of Carla, and I have no regrets! Sending much love and condolences to her family and friends.
I am so sorry to the Pitcher family. You have always been friends of ours and we care for each of you so much. Our condolences, love and prayers go out to you. Maybe dad who we just lost will be there to welcome her home. Love you all, Cami and Marsha.
I'm deeply sorry for your Loss and Pain. I know the memories of your sister will help you through this difficult time.
Prayers for your family.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Carla's passing. She is a very fond part of my elementary, jr. high, and high school years...I even have an old black-and-white photo of her that she gave me back when we were in about the 3rd grade. I still have it in a journal from way back then. She was, is, and will continue to be an example of humor, intelligence, and beauty that I will never forget. Her vivaciousness and spirit will be missed in this life. My deepest sympathies and love to each of you.
I'm very sorry about her passing. Her sons were friends with my sons (Tyson/Brandon Chow), especially because of basketball. We lived in the same neighborhood, went to some of the same schools. Carla was definitely a mentor and touched the lives of so many people. It is a great loss.
We are so sorry for your loss. Carla was a wonderful person. She has such a sweet spirit and she will be missed here at Tara Gardens. Please let us know if we can help. 🙏☯️☮️💟
We are so sorry to hear the very sad news of Carla’s passing. Although our time shared with Carla was too short, we think of her often and remember the happy times we spent with her and the family. We will always remember her with love and affection. Our thoughts are with the family and especially Christian and Gabriel, fondest love always, Diane and Dave
RIP
Feeling the loss of this great family.
Carla was cool, my heart goes out to her sons. And all the Pitcher family. Love you all.
I send love from all the Crabtree family, I wanted to be there so sorry I was unable to make it to the funeral
Carla has been on my mind, going through all my memories with her. When we were young we made the most elaborate barbie doll houses together, but her barbies were always the most sophisticated. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding, and when I couldn't find the perfect veil, she made it for me herself...and did my hair. Later, we would have long talks while we watched our kids sledding. She had so much personality and could make anything fun. My heart and prayers are with you.
Such a beautiful service . Thank you for allowing us to be part of it . The rise you gave us is growing . So I will continue to propagate it and plant it in our garden to always remember and have a piece of her .💓
Gone to soon!
