Carmel O'Halloran, our devoted mother, beloved grandmother, and cherished great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025. Carmel's life began in Ireland, where she spent her formative years until the age of 20. In Spain she met and fell in love with Richard Boner, who was stationed there with the US Air Force. They moved to the United States and they had four fabulous, delightful, caring, brilliant children, Frieda Anne Berlin, Derek Lee Boner, Cailin Marie Sandstedt, and her precious baby, Brian John O'Halloran.
Carmel's life was one of resilience and dedication. Despite the challenges of moving frequently across the United States, including Kansas, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, and finally Utah, she found joy in raising her children. Her love and support extended not only to her immediate family but also to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored.
Carmel returned to the workforce in Virginia in retail. Following the move to Abilene, Texas she delved into the banking industry. She worked tirelessly, often holding down two jobs to provide for her family and to secure her future. In Salt Lake City she was employed by Key Bank and Sears - Downtown. Even while juggling work responsibilities, she pursued education, demonstrating her commitment to self-improvement and personal growth. Throughout her life, Carmel exhibited remarkable strength and determination and created family-like bonds leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working with her.
Known as Granny to most people, she gave generously and sometimes anonymously to people in need and neighbors graduating from high school or other achievements.
Carmel was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Carmel had great faith, she always put her heart and soul into her callings. She never liked ward dinners but did enjoy making friends in the many wards she attended. She always tried to learn and grow by reading the scriptures striving to gain more understanding.
Carmel enjoyed gardening, making sure no weeds survived in her yard, even when the yard was nothing more than dirt and rocks. She would rake the rocks to make them look tidy. She insisted the granddaughters cut the grass up against the fence with scissors because the edger made unsightly marks on the fence.
She loved classical music and the symphony; for many years, she volunteered as an usher at the Utah Symphony. She loved Elvis, the Beatles and Roy Orbison too.
She loved reading and used her time on Trax to and from work to read her Kindle. However, she usually ended up chatting with those around her.
She always had a tidy home. She insisted the refrigerator was cleaned out and scrubbed weekly. She demanded the pantry be completely emptied, wiped down and reorganized each month. She found great joy in organized drawers and closets.
She rotated her clothing with the season. Very much a fashionista, she had fabulous taste in clothing including many beautiful leather jackets and suits. She had the perfect shoes for every outfit. She loved to find great deals, shopped until she found the shirt, sweater or jacket that matched an outfit with perfection.
She did not suffer fools, jobs done halfway, lame excuses, laziness nor tardiness. She watched the news, kept up to date with world events, politics, and pop culture and expected all around her to be thusly educated. Carmel was stubborn to a fault. Highly critical and impatient, she wanted everyone to live up to the best of their abilities.
Carmel looked forward to the Olympics and each tennis open. She liked English TV shows and a good movie but never a musical.
Carmel really loved fresh off the vine tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, whipped cream, rice pudding, bread pudding, trifle, Irish brown bread with butter and good milk chocolate.
Always up for an adventure, Carmel enjoyed road trips, vacations, the beach, and trips to Disneyland with her grandchildren. She passed out last time she road Space Mountain, after that she only road rides like Peter Pan and Storybook Land Canal Boats.
Carmel is survived by her sister Joan (Tom) Keogh of Australia, sister Patricia (Paul) Bridgeman of Ireland, her daughter Frieda (Scott) Berlin of Utah, her son Derek (Lisa) Boner of California, her daughter Cailin (Carl) Sandstedt of Utah, her son Brian O’Halloran of Texas, her grandson Alex(Ashley) and his children Mariah, Angel, Tiger, Breylenne and Lainey Gallimore of Texas , her granddaughter Mandy Westover (Eric) Dow and their children Nathan and Molly of Utah, her granddaughter Courtney Bonner of California, her granddaughter Ashley Westover (Brett) Albiston of Utah, her grandson Rick Bonner (fiancée Byanca) and her son Jacob, his son Levi and their daughter Rylee of California, her granddaughter Kristen Westover (Daniel) Schneyder and their children West, Liam, Audrey, and Amelia of Utah, her granddaughter Lauren Westover of Utah, her granddaughter Carmel Sandstedt of Utah and her granddaughter Claire Sandstedt of Utah. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kevin and Anne O'Halloran, and her brothers Desmond and Ray O'Halloran of Ireland.
In honoring Carmel's memory, let us celebrate the legacy of love and strength she leaves behind. May her spirit continue to inspire us all.
A Memorial will be held 2 PM, Saturday, November 29, 2025, Larkin Mortuary, Riverton, 3688 West 12600 South in Riverton, Utah. Memorial services will be streamed via Zoom for those wishing to attend virtually.

I met Carmel in 1990 when I started at Keybank. We immediately became friends for which I am so grateful.
I loved to hear her talk about her kids (especially Baby Brian 😃) and her grandkids. She was so proud of you all. She loved you very much, it was so obvious in the way she talked about you all.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. It is so hard to say goodbye. I know you have lots and lots of good memories, even though the last years were so difficult. It was much the same for my mom and myself. She and I were very close and while I am relieved for her not to have to suffer anymore, I do miss her.
How wonderful that she was able to hold on long enough for your girls to graduate high school. I am certain she wanted to be there for you and for them for that milestone.

I feel your loss to a small degree too. She was an important part of my life too and I will miss her. Did I ever tell you she came to the hospital while I was working to give me support and advice when I was going through my divorce? She was always thoughtful and compassionate to those around her. Oh I am so sorry to hear that she leaves behind a beautiful family and she's in peace now, no more pain. I would like to thank you so much for letting me be part of your team and know your mom. She was a strong woman and very kind. She worried about everybody. I remember her telling me "I pray for you because yesterday you looked so tired," she was amazing!! Thank you again for trusting me with your mom. It was a pleasure to go and have those long talks. My prayers are with your family, everyone in the family takes the loss of relative in a different way. I always tell them to take a time to say bye bye to your mom before her body is taken. Some people like to have a private moment and other ones, doing it all together helps a lot for your grieving, but not everyone likes to take that time. Tell me if you need anything, please. I hope her journey on the other side will have her crossing paths with my mom. My mom would love her as much as I do.

Carmel O’ Halloran
She has always welcomed me into her home, with much love. When I went to visit her and her daughters, I always felt like I was the one that received therapy and love when I went into their home.
Carmel was one of the most hard-working women I have ever known. Most of her life she had worked two jobs.
Carmel spoke what was on her mind, she was very opinionated, and well versed. She was very proud of her grandchildren especially with her granddaughters that lived with her. They always had to play the piano, and spoke of what they were doing so that I would know what they were up to. How they excelled.
She wanted to know whenever I came into her home what my family was doing and how things were with us in my home.
She cared about everyone.
She was a true friend and I will always be a better person because of her friendship.
She was an inspiration for us. At times when feeling sad or blue, thinking of her and her quick wit was a sure remedy to brighten the day.
I loved always knowing where I stood with her. She had a talent of exactness. Whether she felt it or not, she was a great example of confidence. Not arrogance, just sure of herself. I was never around her, but what she made me feel and think better of myself. What a gift.
For a few short months she and my husband rode the bus together downtown for work. Oh the conversations they had. She was always the bright spot of his mornings. She had that knack, the ability to talk with anyone, and make them feel better for having had the conversation.
Her life stories were a delight to hear. Her wisdom was far reaching. The way she told stories was as if you were right there as a spectator.
She will be sorely missed.
Yesterday a dear friend, several years my senior, slipped from this life into the next peacefully. She was a petite spit fire of a woman.
She spoke her mind: If it was a spade, she would call it a spade, not a heart or Diamond, just a spade.
She would not push anything on you, yet somehow you knew if you ever needed anything, she had your back.
She had a quick wit and always, always a kind word.
Just a few minutes in her company you would be laughing and feeling invincible.
Everyone should have such a friend. I am grateful she has been a force in my life for more than two decades. Thinking of you, and missing you, Carmel.

What an amazing family matriarch. So beautiful! We were blessed to be her neighbors for many years. I love how she stood for truth and shared her honest opinions. I saw her give so much care to Lauren.
