Our dear friend, teacher, aunt, and sister, Dwanna Lee Riddle, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2025, having lived a wonderful and giving life for 88 years. Dwanna was born on September 17, 1937, in Dinkeyville, a small town near Bingham Canyon to Weldo Dee and Mary Lucille Miller Riddle. Dwanna was the youngest in a family of three girls. One boy, Glen Dee, died of pneumonia at the age of three months.
When Dwanna was five, her family moved to West Valley where she attended grade school in Taylorsville, Valley Junior High in Granger, and Cyprus High School in Magna. Dwanna attended Brigham Young University on a freshman scholarship, graduating in three years with a double major in Physical Education and History. She worked at Dixon Jr. High School teaching Physical Education for the next three years.
Dwanna served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 18 months in the North British Mission at the age of 24. The mission was divided, and Dwanna finished her service in the Northeast British Mission, in Leeds.
Returning home from her mission, Dwanna taught World and U.S. History at Provo High School. For 32 years she taught Honors and Advanced Placement U.S. History. She was a master teacher, and her students achieved high scores on AP exams for college level credit consistently.
Dwanna received dozens of honors including many years as Teacher of the Year for Provo High School and District, receiving the Golden Bulldog Award and the Golden Apple Award twice. After her retirement from teaching Dwanna supervised interns and student teachers for Brigham Young University for 15 years, finishing her 50-year career of teaching.
Dwanna enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, gardening, fishing and spending time with family at her cabin in Wildwood in the Provo Canyon. She was a masterful seamstress, quilter, crocheter and her embroidery was exquisite.
Dwanna was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a counselor in the Stake Young Women's, Primary teacher, and a sports director in her ward and stake. Dwanna loved serving as a teacher in a special Relief Society comprised of individuals with learning delays and modeled sweet ministering to the sisters in her ward.
Dwanna was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Maurine and Colleen, and brother Glen Dee Riddle. She leaves behind her dear friend Betty, who exemplifies the true meaning of friend.
Dwanna's funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 25, at the Grandview 6th Ward chapel at 1600 North 1880 West in Provo, Utah, at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held an hour before services in the Relief Society room. Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy, Utah.
The service will be livestreamed via Zoom and can be accessed by clicking the "Watch Services" button above.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Dwanna, donations can be made to the College and Career Fund at Provo High School, 1199 North Lakeshore Drive, Provo, Utah 84601, where she taught for 32 years.
The family would like to thank the Bright Star and Hospice nurses who were so kind and attentive to Dwanna's care. They are so appreciative of all of them.
Dwanna inspired me! My love of US history started in her classroom and continues today! She believed that I was a capable student and her beliefs fostered my growth as a teen. Rest in peace.
Dear Dwanna,
Thank you for your example of kindness and charity. Thank you for being such an amazing friend for so many years! Thank you for introducing me to the joy of having little white poodles in my life! They are truly the best! Thanks especially for giving me my first little white boy poodle that I named JJ. He was the love of my life and helped me get through graduate school and medical school. I am looking forward to seeing you again someday. God be with you until we meet again.
With love and much respect, Jodi "Rose'
What a remarkable lady of faith, learning and wisdom! She made US History come alive. She imbued in her students a love for critical thinking. Our children were taught a love for US History that burns brightly—the next generation of benefactors of Deanna’s enduring legacy. Her example will continue through the ages. Our prayers to her family members at this tender time.
Kindly, The Fuja Family
I miss you already.
You touched my life and I will forever be grateful!
She was such a wonderful, caring and passionate teacher who strived to give her students a thirst for knowledge. I had the opportunity to tell her that many years after graduating. Rest in peace Dwanna
