Earl Dean Price, age 78, passed away January 11, 2026, at his home in Bountiful, UT, following complications after back surgery. Earl was born on March 29, 1947, in Salt Lake City, UT, to John Newell and Vivian Whitehead Price. He was the third of five children born and raised on Wilson Avenue in Sugarhouse and graduated from Highland High School.
Earl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to the New England States Mission and served under President Boyd K. Packer. His favorite place was Boston, where he developed a love for lobster that he passed to his children and Grandchildren. After his mission, Earl attended the University of Utah, where he met his wife, Sheila Glade, in the institute building. He sold his prized possession, a 1957 Chevy to buy a ring and proposed in the parking lot of his father’s gas station. They celebrated across the street with dinner at the Pagoda, the family’s favorite restaurant. This was the only time he put a car second in his marriage. They married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1969 and started their married life, welcoming one daughter and three sons. In 1974, they built their current house in Bountiful, UT.
Earl spent time alongside his father at Price’s Conoco on E Street in Salt Lake City. He was a car enthusiast through and through and developed a passion for restoring antique cars and hot rods. He was an active member of the Model A Club Salty A’s, spending his leisure time entering car shows, going to swap meets, and driving in parades. His cars won many awards, and his Model A was even featured on the sign in Wendover. Earl will greatly miss his car buddies and Saturday lunches.
Earl attended the Police Academy and worked for the Salt Lake City Police Department for 49 and a half years. He took flight lessons and became the pilot of the Salt Lake City Police Helicopter, walking away from two different crashes before the police helicopter was retired. During his time on the force, Earl served as a K-9 officer with Tally, rode a Kawasaki on Motors, was part of the Vice Squad and Narcotics, and was a Detective who focused on recovering stolen cars and locating missing children when he finally retired.
In addition to his parents, J. Newell and Vivian, Earl was preceded in death by his sister DeNae Schaefermeyer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sheila; daughter, Amy Michelle Price of Spring Creek, NV; son, Earl Dean Price, Jr., affectionately known as Pete; son Robert Dean Price (Jessie); and Nicholas Dean Price, all of Bountiful, UT.
