Elain Chamberlain Young passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 11, 2024 with family members by her side after a long battle with kidney disease. Elain was born in Kanab, Utah to Mark and Sally Heaton Chamberlain, she the 9th of 10 children. She was raised on a farm in Orderville and learned the value of hard work from an early age. She attended Valley High School, participating in cheerleading, band, drama, choir, yearbook staff, and student government. She then attended Dixie College in St George, graduating in 1955.

She married Gene Young on October 7, 1955 in the St George Temple and lived first in Orderville where their daughter, Sheryl was born. They moved to Salt Lake and then bought one of the first new houses in White City. Their sons Ken and Kurt were born while living there.
In 1965 they purchased an old farm house and seven acres in Granite. They have spent the last 59 years making their home and yard into a family gathering place. So many fun family memories have been made there.

Elain has always been active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She started serving as a primary teacher as soon as she graduated from Primary. She served in some capacity in Primary for over 60 years, as a teacher, Ward Primary President, and Stake Primary President. She worked in the Boy Scout program for over 30 years as a den leader and merit badge counselor. She was awarded the Silver Beaver for her many years of service in Scouting.

When her three children were all in school, Elain went back to school herself and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught at Canyon View Elementary, beginning in the 6th grade, and then moving to 2nd grade where she taught for 24 years. She gained many new friends among the people she worked with and positively influenced hundreds of children during her years teaching.

Elain has been a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for many years and has enjoyed making many new friends there, and learning more about her pioneer heritage.

Elain’s favorite thing in life was her family. She taught us so much about loving each other and set such a good example for her posterity. She was only blessed with three children, but ended up with a large posterity of 15 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Her influence on many others not of her own family will be felt for many years to come.

Elain is survived by her children: Sheryl, Ken (Cynthia) and Kurt (Lisa). Grandchildren: Tracy Spencer (Paul), Mindy Ogden (Jon), Holly Carlson (Ben), Carly Rignell (Jason), Dane Smart (Mariah), Amber Young, Mandy McTiernan (Mike), Chayden Young (Ashlyn), Aleigh Birkeland (Kelly), Madison Anderson, Ashley Polidori (Will), Alexa Melancon (Matt), Aarika Rasekhi (Roshan), Julia Jenson (Seth). Thirty-eight great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Elain was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, of 66 years, son-in law, Stan Smart, her granddaughter Becky Smart, and her brothers: Val, Dell, Arel, Gard, and her sisters: Clella, Phyllis, LaPreal, Konda, and RaNee. There are so many people to welcome her home!

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building at 2675 East Mt. Jordan Road, Sandy, Utah 84092. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at the church and again from 9:30 -
10:30 AM Saturday morning prior to the service. Interment will be in the Granite Cemetery located at 2969 East 9800 South, Granite, Utah.

We loved Elaine and Gene. They and their home were always so welcoming to our family. We so love their wonderful posterity. We're sad that we can't make the services to pay our respects in person, and to get reacquainted with everyone.

I treasure the years I lived in Granite raising a family and forming friendships that transcend time. I carry fond memories of the Young family and consider myself blessed by the years I spent living among you. Elain left a lasting imprint on my heart and I’m better for having known and loved her. May the legacy of her well-lived life bless, comfort and encourage you individually and as a family until you meet her again. Love to you all, Jill Nelson

- Jill Nelson

Elaine was a wonderful person. She attended the services for my granddaughter and daughter and I appreciated that so much. I am sorry I will not be able to attend her service but I want her family to know how fondly I remember her. Her son Ken is my son in law

I loved Elaine and knew her well. Everyone in our little town of Granite also knew her and loved her. I worked at Turf Sprinkler in the summers of high school and college days, just like many of us Granite kids did. She was just so sweet and nice to everyone and was a truly good person. I know that she will be missed, but I’m going to talk to her right now and thank her for everything she did.

A truly great lady noble in every way. We have admired the Young family ever since we moved here in 1976. They freely shared their love hosting many parties and events with their wonderful home and yard especially suited for get togethers every one was welcome. We will miss her but know she is in a better place and will continue welcoming each of us as we return to our heavenly home

Sorry I did not make it to tell you in person how much I loved your mother and can hear her laugh in my head. I taught kindergarten at Canyon View with her just down the hall in 2nd grade. She was fun to be around and a teacher I used as an example to follow. She will always hold a place in my heart. Had great faculty parties at her house. May God bless your family at this loss. Lots of love to all.

- Nancy Rose

Our family has been blessed by such a great lady. Parties, weddings, reunions. Her generosity was huge.

Always smiling when I saw her. A very choice daughter of our Heavenly Father.

Well done

Our family would like to express our condolences to the young family on the loss of Elain. Our family was lucky enough to enjoy a 30-year-plus friendship with Gene, Elain, and many extended family members. We miss them both dearly. We spent many wonderful summer days swimming in the pool and enjoying the lovely backyard of their home. Our daughter was in her second-grade class at Canyon View. Being in the class helped to shape her into the person she is today. Again, we are deeply sorry for your enormous loss. But we are happy she is at peace and re-united with Gene.

We have known Elain for many years. She was always so willing to share their home and property with the neighbors, family, friends, and ward members. Some of our fondest memories in Granite have been at the Young home. She always taught primary and loved the youth and scouts. Elain was a gentle soul with the kindest and giving heart. We will miss her so much but feel thankful to have had the privilege of traveling through life with her. Love , Eddie and Jan

- Janice Hansen

I want Elain's family to know what a wonderful teacher Elain was in Jordan School District. I taught at Canyon View while getting my master's degree, and was able to have my own children with me there, where my Heidi had the privilege of having her as her second-grade teacher. What a gem she was! She was so patient and helpful with her, and she thrived. Elain was so positive and Heidi loved her! May you be comforted and blessed with peace as you celebrate your mom's wonderful legacy.
