Errol Sterling Remington, age 87, passed away at his home on October 13, 2024, in Salt Lake City from natural causes.
Errol was born February 6, 1937, to Violet Dorothy Wendell and Kenneth Jackson Remington in Salt Lake City. He is survived by Diane Marie St. Clair, partner for life; three children, Scott Remington, Diana Remington and Jennifer (Joe) Romero, and five grandchildren; Nicki (Marty) Kasteler, Rann Manley and Alex, Ashton and Andrew Romero. Errol loved his family and hopefully, let them know it.
Errol graduated from West High School in 1955, received a BA in English Literature in 1971, a MSW in 1981 and didn't quite finish a DSW in 1987. He worked for twenty years in the Utah and Salt Lake County Divisions of Alcohol and Drugs. He was Director of The First Step House in the mid-eighties and oversaw its transformation to an effective and respected institution. While at Salt Lake County, he wrote proposals resulting in millions of federal and state dollars, both for substance abuse treatment and criminal justice services. He wrote the proposal that brought the first federal funds to Utah for Drug Court. He chaired the committee that designed and implemented the first statewide peer review program for substance abuse.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956 and, while not a lifer, he learned to love the water. He became enamored with sailboats and sailing in his late twenties and did become a lifer in that regard. He didn't care much if he was sailing, working on boats or buying and selling them. "There is nothing, absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about with boats." The philosopher, Water Rat, told this to his friend Mole in The Wind and the Willows but perhaps it was just as true for Errol.
In his later years, Errol compiled binders of family history information, including Grandma Wendell’s cookbook, her diaries and a book about his brothers. After Errol and Diane went to England, he composed the book Remingtons of Lockington to serve as an addendum to Ward Roylance's Remingtons of Utah, although it pales beside Ward's tome. He gave a copy of it to all descendants of his and his brothers. Straying from family affairs, he wrote A Tour of Machu Picchu after spending a week there. He also wrote memoirs of his own life for those who care.
Errol has chosen to be cremated, so there will be no viewing. A celebration of his life will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. There will be a visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 pm with memorial services to follow at 5:00 pm.
For those unable to attend the service in person, the family invites you to join via Zoom, at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85461559287
In lieu of flowers, please do something nice for someone you don't like.
Guestbook/Condolences
Errol was my Nordy Ebar coffee Buddy! For over 5 years we enjoyed a cup of Joe together several times a month. It started with 4 life long friends and ended up just us 2. I somehow managed to wiggle my way in! We spoke about life, family, people, politics and friends. He shared his writing and stories with all of us. He became a permanent welcomed visitor at his favorite table with a view of the mall walkers. Many of them would stop and say hello as they made their rounds. Errol was an intelligent, quick witted beautiful soul. We will very much miss him… Gods Speed dear friend.
Errol was such a kind human and neighbor, and we enjoyed listening to his stories. Diane, we are so sorry for your loss. Sending love and prayers your way from Cincinnati.
My condolences to all of Errol's family and extended family. Errol has touched many hearts. I had the privilege to meet Errol a few years ago in Washington State. We spent several hours swapping stories and laughing while we sat overlooking the Puget Sound. He made me feel like we had know each other for many years. I will always appreciate how he included my family as extended family. He will be remembered through his wonderful stories, kind heart and laughter.
I was able to know Errol through my cousin Dee Dee (Diane). I spent a couple of visits with them at their beautiful house on the pond, drinking wine on the back deck. I was also privileged to get to know him better when they came to visit my family in Salem Oregon.
Although brief, Errol left a lasting impression on my heart. I loved our conversations. I loved listening to his amazing stories. I loved the Joy he exuded in his life, with his family and with Dee Dee. I loved his fruitcake and the devotion and love he put into each and everyone of them. I loved listening to him laugh. He was always kind and interesting and fun loving. All in all a gregarious and joyful personality.
After reading his obituary, I only wish I’d heard more of the stories he had to tell..
I feel fortunate to have known him and to have been at least, a little part of his life and very happy that he was a part of mine.
Sincerely,
JoAnn
