  • Gail Christian Kummer, age 96, passed away and returned home March 10, 2021. Gail was born on February 20, 1925 in Park City, Utah, the fifth child of Frederick and Bertha Kummer. He married Maxine Sessions on November 26, 1946, and they spent over 70 years together as devoted sweethearts. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Maxine preceded him in death in 2017.

Gail’s life was a portrait in hard work and determination. He began his working career as an underground miner at Park City’s Mayflower Mine. He later worked many years as a metallurgist and production supervisor at Eimco, Inc. in Salt Lake City. He finished his full-time career with the U.S. Postal Service. Thereafter, he continued working part-time, well into his eighties, delivering documents for United Title.

Gail’s value for hard work spilled over into all aspects of his life. Service to family and community were his priorities and caring for others was his constant focus. Everyone who knew Gail considered him a friend and as someone willing to lend a helping hand. He was elected and served on the Park City Council for many years. He played an instrumental role in planning and bringing about Park City’s emergence as a premier resort area. He remained active in many other community and church endeavors throughout his life and constantly looked for ways to help others.

Gail is survived by his son, Gary Mason (Cheryle), his daughter, Gay Lynn Johnson (Kelly) and his son, Randy Kummer (Lynda); eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A grandson, Scott Mason; and a great-granddaughter, Shayna Mason preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy, UT. A viewing will be held there on Monday evening, March 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and again on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, prior to the funeral services. Interment will be at the Park City Cemetery.

    Guestbook/Condolences

    My condolences to the family.

Gail was one of the warmest people of my childhood in Park City. He and Maxine always greeted me with great interest and warmth which I appreciated. He would tell me stories of his childhood growing up in Empire Canyon with my Father Robert Richardson and how my Grandmother treated him like one of her children. Gail still called my Dad to see how he was doing in the last year.

    - Mike Richardson

Please accept my condolences. Gail was a great guy. He and Maxine were friends of my Mom and Dad. Gail was fun to be around, I even played basketball with Gail at the Memorial Building. He will be missed. Rest-In-Peace Gail.

Gail Kummer was the most caring & loving man I have ever known. He always had a smile upon his face and always gave you a hug when you seen him. He always told me how much he loved me and my kids and how special we we're to him. We will surely miss him in this life, but know that he will be reunited with his sweetheart and dearly beloved wife Maxine Kummer. I hope Scott asks you to gold 18 holes with him up there in that special place weall call heaven. I know he is in a better place and he is just one one angel looking out for me and my family. Give Scott, Shayna and grandma kummer a big hug and kiss from me and Matthew. Love you tons. Brenda Mason

I was fortunate enough to work with Gail for many years at United Title. He was truly one of a kind, and I am so lucky to have known him. His smile and energy were infectious. He would come to work whistling in the morning. I still remember the tune. He told me he didn't do the job for the money, he did it for the hugs and cookies. I have never met such a wonderful human in my life and I will miss him. My thoughts go out to his family.

What a great man. Always so positive and that infectious smile was his trade mark. My father Louis, always thought the world of Gail. They worked together at the Daily West for a while. I remember his kindness and radiant personality. My best to the entire family. Don Williams.

Always the example of love and kindness. Gail and Maxine made my childhood richer. So grateful to have known them in my lifetime. They have left a legacy of love.

We so enjoyed visiting with Gayle every time we say him. He had the knack to make one feel they were the most important to him at that moment.

We are so old and decrepit we thought we would just watch the streaming on line.

We are so sorry for your loss but also glad for Gayle that he can be with Maxine and others who have gone before him. He lived a good, long life.

    May God bless you all.

Gail worked at my company, United Title Services, for many years. Without a doubt, he was one of the best employees we ever hired. He had such a great attitude and a strong work ethic that I didn't even realize he only had one hand until three years after we hired him. Here is an eightysomething year old running circles around everyone (including me) in the office. He would poke his head into my office often to thank me for hiring him and to tell me that "this was the best job he ever had". He was definately one of a kind and I feel honored to have known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Rest in Peace my friend.
