Listen to Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Ray Berg, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at his home, with his wife Joette and children at his side. He was 80 years old. Born March 29, 1945, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clifford and Grace Berg, he lived a life marked by faith, service, dedication, and love. After a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, he left this life as he had lived it—an example of enduring strong to the end.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jerry served faithfully in the Lima, Peru Andes Mission, an experience that deeply shaped his love for the gospel and his lifelong desire to serve in any capacity he was called. His time in Peru also gave him a deep love for the Spanish language, which he spoke fluently throughout his life. He diligently studied the scriptures and found joy in sharing his testimony with others.

Education and service were central to his life. He attended the University of Utah and then was accepted into the Washington University dental school in St. Louis, Missouri, where he met Ginny, whom he married in 1973. Together they raised five children: Sandy, Tamara, Annette, Jason, and Ashley. They divorced in 1994. On December 26, 2017 he married Joette Stoffel, who survives him.

He was an Eagle Scout—earning the honor in only two years—and carried that spirit of determination throughout his life. A gifted singer, he enjoyed performing with his high school Madrigals, and his love of the arts extended into writing, painting, and sculpting, where his creativity and imagination flourished.

Professionally, he found joy in his career as a dentist, always searching for the latest technologies to improve patient care. He served as the team dentist for the Utah Jazz for 15 years, a role he truly treasured. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and cherished the friendships he made throughout his life. Known for his warmth and kindness and sense of humor, he had the remarkable ability to become fast friends with nearly everyone he met.

He is survived by his wife, Joette; his children Sandy (Troy) Jones, Tamara (Alex) Fox, Annette (JS) Schmidt, Jason Berg, and Ashley Deegan; his siblings Alice Beck, Bob (Levon) Berg, Randy (Judy) Berg, Kathy (Jack) Grotepas, Bobbie Berg, Lynnette (John) Hiskey, and Kristy (Bob) Kvenvold, and 9 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Arnie, and nephews, Chad and Jared.

His legacy of faith, love of the gospel, service, and love for family and friends will live on in all who knew him. His presence will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

We would also like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and, medical professionals that have cared for him during the last several months. A special thanks to Dr. Rebecca Levine, Dr. Bert Lopransri, Pamela Sunshine, Dr. Gary Garner, and Dr. Johnathan Whisenant.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 12120 South 1300 West Riverton, UT 84065. A second viewing will take place at the same location on Monday, October 6, from 10:00-10:45 AM with the funeral to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Redwood Memorial Cemetery. The funeral will be livestreamed via Zoom and can be accessed by clicking the "Watch Services" button above.

I was fortunate enough to have known Jerry for 55 years!! I sat next to him for four years in dental school, then side by side for another 44 years sharing dental offices. He was always so steady and friendly, not only with me, but with his family and patients. He was always innovative and creative in practice and truly loved what he did! He also encouraged me to expand my vision, especially when it came to the practice of placing and restoring implants. I’ll be forever grateful. Recently, I had the opportunity to have a lengthy conversation with Jerry over the phone. It was so amazing to talk with him and hear his most heartfelt thoughts and desires. He honestly told me that he loved me at least five times during our chat! He was always so nice and sweet to Shawna as well. We will miss him, but know he is happy and pain free now. Love to all of his family.

His dedication to his dentistry practice and his ability to making me feel comfortable and creating an atmosphere of non anxiety was second to none. When I was 10 I had dentist trauma. My mother had to find me another dentist and she found Dr. Berg. He was the best dentist. Kind, gentle, and all around cared about how nervous I was. He always recognized me. So I continued to see him year after year. Decade after Decade. 30 years he was my dentist. Even when I moved to Georgia I'd fly back for my routine cleanings. I pray the Lord will comfort you and bless you at his passing. Jerry was a valuable friend and colleague in my youth. I reconnected with him a couple months ago and we planned to get together soon but the relapse of this disease affected that. I will miss him greatly but have many fond memories spending many hours with him and his family to soften the impact of his passing.

- Ken Chidester

The Berg family,
I've known your dad for what seems to be a lifetime, I worked for Sam then your dad after that.
I was able to visit with him with some of the girls that worked for him as well over the years.
He was a good man with a kind heart and only wanted the best for people.
Rest in Paradise my friend

- Glenda Vigil

I was fortunate enough to spend many hours at Jerry’s parents’ home with his sister, Lynnette, during my teenage years. Jerry and my brother, Steve, became dentists together. Jerry was always so kind and friendly, and this large family was so very accepting of everyone who walked into their home. May his family know that Jerry and his extended family have left a very positive mark on the world.

- Brian and Kathy Olsen Withers

Dear Joette and the Berg Family
I truly am sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man. I only recently had the pleasure of really getting to know Jerry. He will be greatly missed. May the Face of the Lord shine bright and may Jerry rest until we all see him again. God's blessings to you and all that loved Jerry and Jerry loved.

- Wanda

Dr. Berg was a very kind and caring man. When I walked in his office door, I was always treated with kindness and respect by him and his staff. I remember a time several years ago, when one of my daughters was living in WDC, and had flown here for work. During her stay, she had some major dental issues. My daughter was not a patient of Dr. Berg, but he worked her in after hours to take care of her problem. I also had a son that needed dental work done. He had no money, but Dr. Berg let him make payments on the treatment. That was the kind of man the Dr. Berg I knew was. When he lost his weight, he inspired me to do the same. What a tremendous example he was! Dr. Berg will be truly missed.

I’m so sorry for your loss Joette, my heart breaks for you and your Family You and Jerry were family to me as well. I’m going to miss him so very much. I am so glad I was able to see him before he passed away and was able to give him a big hug he was so kind and had a big heart. I remember the first time I met you both and River gave you so many kisses and Jerry told me that I was to beautiful to hide my smile and he gave me the smile I had been hiding for a long time because of my teeth. When he showed me my new smile, I started crying because I was finally able to smile. He had done such an amazing job at fixing them. That was the best Christmas gift I had ever gotten, besides my son River of course. My son was the reason I was finally able to meet you both through Preston. I appreciated that we kept hanging out and keeping in touch through the years. You and Jerry helped me so much. I’m so glad I had you both and I will always have a special place in my heart for Jerry and I will make sure I see you as much as I can. I wanted to come but I am working and after work I’m coming to try and see you again. I came by the other day but you were not home. I love you so very much Joette and I’m so sorry you lost your soulmate but you are both bonded for eternity and I know he will be watching over you and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Jerry until we meet again I love you..

- Kerry Dayley
