Dean V. Power

1933 ~ 2015

Dean V. Power, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2015. He was born on July 11, 1933, in Ogden, Utah, the son of Vivian Conlin Power and Beatrice Brussard Power. He was a devoted family man who spent his life in the service of those around him, and he will be dearly missed.

He served in the US Army during the Korean War in Sendai, Japan as a cryptographer in the Signal Corps. He married former high school classmate, Mary Kay Brian, in 1956 in Ogden. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Los Angeles Temple in 1961. They were blessed with six children.

He received his Bachelor's Degree in Physics from the University of Utah in 1959, and later received his Master's Degree in Physics from San Jose State University. He went to work for Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, California, and the family enjoyed living in the Bay Area from 1959 to 1968. When a job offer came up at the El Paso Natural Gas Co. in the nuclear division, the family moved to El Paso, Texas. They were there for eight busy years, with much involvement in church and school activities.

In 1977 the family moved to Sandy, Utah, where Dean taught math for many years at Salt Lake Community College, retiring at age 75. One of the joys of his life was singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for four years. During those years he was able to travel with the choir to Russia, Europe, and Jerusalem. He had a great love of music all his life.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings, including in a Bishopric, YM Presidency, High Priest Group Leader, Stake Missionary, and in the Jordan River Temple.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Kay, and by his children: Laura Power, Janice Power, Carolyn (Ken) Nottingham, Melissa (Andy) Bruno, and John Power (fiancée Robin). His beloved grandchildren are Thomas Zimmerman, Tyler Nottingham, Lisa (Erik) Vorkink, Erin Nottingham, Bradley Nottingham, Austin Bruno, Emily Bruno, Amber Repass, and Kyleigh LaBronte.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Raymond V. Power and Robert C. Power. A precious son, Robert Dean Power, who died in an accident in 1975, is also now reunited with his father.

The viewing will be held Sunday, December 20, from 6:00 ‚ 8:00 PM at the Willow Creek 3rd Ward building, 2400 E Alta Canyon Dr, Sandy, UT 84093. Funeral services will be in the same building on Monday, December 21, at 1:00 PM, where friends may call 1 hour prior to services.
