James “Jim” Brown of Sandy, Utah died at the age of 89 on Thursday, November 20, 2025. He was born on April 10, 1936 in St. Paul, Minnesota to George Robert and Eileen Bagley Brown.
Jim was the more rambunctious boy in the family, often getting into trouble. Growing up he had newspaper routes, worked at Orange Julius and even shined shoes. Every now and then you could find him behind some establishment playing dice games.
He always joked he only got as far as McKinley Junior High, but he did manage to get his GED. In 1956, Jim enlisted in the Navy, serving two years, and once back in the states, he went on to become an iron worker, placing rebar.
He made his way to Salt Lake City, Utah where he met the love of his life, June Malona Williams. They married on June 3, 1972 in Las Vegas at the Little White Chapel of the West.
His greatest achievement in life came on December 30th , 1975 when they adopted a beautiful baby girl named Shannon Malona.
After many years in the “rod patch”, Jim and June started their own business, Brown Steel Company. It was a lot of work and for many years it took Jim to other states. Not wanting to move his family around, he made the sacrifice to come home on weekends and bring his family to him during summers. Jim worked on many exciting projects, the Saraha in Las Vegas, an underground passageway on The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, one of the telescope observatories on the Big Island of Hawaii, not to mention countless buildings all over the Salt Lake Valley.
Jim was always working but when the love of his life, June, passed away in 2011, he stepped back and devoted his time to his daughter and grandson, Colin James. Next to Shannon, his grandson brought so much joy and intention to his life.
Jim eventually got an English Setter named Marley. Marley provided comfort and a purpose for Jim that kept him active for many years. Jim made countless trips to the DMV and bank for new drivers licenses and bank cards because Marley would always sneak off with his wallet and bury it in the back yard.
Jim also loved Keno. Weekend trips on the bus to Wendover was his hobby. On occasion he would hit the jackpots, but mostly he enjoyed getting out of the house and playing the slots. His daughter also enjoyed the late-night phone calls to come rescue him 3 hours away because he had missed the bus…or lost his wallet.
In the end, Jim’s life was his family, work and his Catholic faith. He was an exceptional man who touched the lives of so many people, and we were blessed to be part of his life. There will always be countless memories of Jim and although his absence will be difficult, Jim is no longer in pain and is once again reunited with June. He can’t complain at all, at all considering the shape he’s in.
