Our beloved mother’s mortal life came to a peaceful end on October 25, 2025, in St. George, UT. She had a long, full life of 91 years. She was born to James William Bean and Naoma Spencer on August 31, 1934, in Salt Lake City, UT.
Her early years were spent in Chicago, IL, where her father worked for United Airlines. The sudden loss of her mother when she was 13 brought the family back to Salt Lake City.
Janis lived on 2nd Avenue until she graduated from East High School. She pursued a nursing degree at Brigham Young University’s inaugural nursing program and, upon completion, worked for a short time at Primary Children’s Hospital. She then took her skills to Pensacola, FL, where she met Gerald Leon Glade, a naval pilot, whom she married on June 24, 1961, in Clark County, NV. It just so happened that Jerry grew up just eight blocks away from Janis in Salt Lake City, but he attended West High School. They met 2,000 miles away from home. Janis’ marriage to Jerry was solemnized in the Oakland Temple on February 25, 1967.
This union took her to many cities and countries during Jerry’s 30-year career in the US Navy. Her nursing career took a hiatus while she raised her four children. She was a leader of the Squadron Wives’ Clubs while Jerry commanded naval units and installations during and after the Vietnam War. Janis and Jerry lived in Atsugi, Japan, for three years, and this experience likely stimulated a desire to experience new cultures around the world. She can claim to have visited every continent in the northern hemisphere as well as many islands in the South Pacific. She also felt impressed to educate her children about the history and culture of each place they lived, which included Florida, Virginia, California, Rhode Island, Nevada, Utah, and Japan.
Janis loved to sew, knit, crochet, and excelled in a variety of needlework. She created beautiful cross stitch pieces of art; however, it was quilting that she truly loved. She became a master quilter, a member of the Utah Quilters Guild, and had many quilts on display in public settings and buildings.
Janis had faith in and a deep love for her Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings, including Relief Society President.
In addition to four children, Cary (Tammy), Heather (Brian), Holly, and Rulon, she has 12 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Each one held a very special place in her heart, and she regularly brought her family together for reunions for over 20 years. She was preceded in death by Jerry, who departed this life on July 11, 2022. She will be buried with her husband in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
