Listen to Obituary

Karl Jacob Finch was born on October 23, 2008 at Intermountain Medical Center to parents, Jacob D. Finch and Melissa M. King Finch. He was a beautiful baby with the longest toes and most slender fingers we had ever seen. We knew he was destined to be a piano player from the start.
Karl is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized and confirmed at the age of 8 years on 5 Nov. 2016. He continued in his faith by attending weekly church meetings and youth activities. On 5 Jan. 2020, he was ordained to the office of a Deacon and later was called to serve as the Deacon Quorum President. He fulfilled this calling diligently week after week.

Karl is a person that wants to know everything. There is nothing that isn’t worth investigating. He learned how to cook after watching Alton Brown on the Food Network. His best recipes include: the General’s Fried Chicken, Tomorrow French fries, and Weeknight Spaghetti (this one includes anchovies, which Karl had no problem tossing in his mouth to test for quality!) He began a Family and Consumer Science class this fall where he was learning how to sew. He knows how to play chess…and win. He loves to read. He usually has at least 3 books going at the same time. He was starting his 3rd year in piano lessons. His skill with mastering piano technique is amazing. His favorite pieces include: Cantina Band(Star Wars), This is Halloween(The Nightmare Before Christmas), and Gravity Falls. He was awarded a Superior rating for his piano solo in the National Federation of Music Clubs in 2021.

Growing up, Karl tried various ways to keep his body healthy through physical activity. He has participated in martial arts, Jr. Jazz basketball, skateboarding, long boarding, bicycling, ice skating, swimming, and his favorite…baseball. Karl started t-ball in the Taylorsville Youth Baseball league and continued each year after and progressed to being on the Cardinals Majors team. This had some conflict in the family as we are all avid Cubs fans. If you are a fan of the game, you know that the Cardinals and Cubs are bitter rivals. Karl didn’t mind though because he just loves to play. Karl is talented enough to play wherever his coach needs him to play. He worked on being a skilled catcher and that quickly became his favorite position. He earned the nickname “Captain Clutch” from his coach because Karl has nerves of steel and could always get the team through a rough patch in a game. His patience at the plate earned him a sweet on base percentage that always encouraged the team. Karl is a great leader and is always trying to find ways to build up confidence in his teammates and lead by his example. He is a confident player, yet never boastful.

Learning in school comes naturally to Karl. He grasps concepts readily and easily. He studied Mandarin Chinese through a dual immersion program at Calvin Smith Elementary and continued in a Chinese class and Chinese Culture Club at Bennion Junior High School. On occasion he and his brother would have private conversations in Mandarin that would cause slight confusion to their parents. It was awesome! His love of learning earned him good grades on many advanced levels. Upon graduating elementary school, Karl was presented a certificate and pin for Outstanding Academic Achievement through the President’s Education Awards Program. He loves all his teachers and was sad to move to new classrooms until he found out that he loved those teachers, too.
On his downtime, Karl loves to watch Mark Rober, Mr. Beast, Dr. Who, and videos about Disneyland. He likes to create things and has the mind of an engineer—always wanting to know how things work. He has been working on a novel that he had hopes to publish one day. He also enjoys spending time at the Bitner Ranch. Whether it was climbing a ladder to the hayloft to swing on a rope, climbing the stairs to the scary attic, or hiking around the property—Karl always found something to do there. It is a favorite birthday spot for him. Each fall, he also hunts for mule deer with his dad and cousins.

Karl is the oldest of four children. He is the stereotypical big brother. He helps his brother and sisters daily with a quick and willing attitude. He set a great path for them to follow in his footsteps.
Karl left this mortal existence on Nov 1, 2021 after a severe head trauma he received after an auto-pedestrian accident. He is greatly missed and will be forever remembered in the community.

Karl is survived by his parents: Jacob D and Melissa M Finch (King) and his siblings: Jackson Finch, Felicity Finch, and Lillian Finch
Karl is preceded in death by his great grandparents: Juanita Carter (Conner), Art Carter, Karl M. Conner, Vurrell Finch, and Michael Andrews.

A viewing will be held Friday, November 5, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 6250 S 2200 W. Taylorsville, UT 84129. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 6250 S 2200 W. Taylorsville, UT 84129. Family and friends may call upon the family one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park 3401 S. Highland Dr. Millcreek, UT 84106

Jacob, Melissa and family,
we are so terribly heartbroken for the heartbreak your going through for the loss of your precious Karl. it's so hard to know what to say when something as tragic as this happens, so will just say it in a poem if you don't mind <3

when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand that an angel came and called my name, and took me by the hand, The angel said my place was ready in Heaven far above, and that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love. but when I walked through Heaven's gates I felt so at home for God looked down, smiled at me and told me "Welcome Home"
So when tomorrow starts without me don't think we're far apart, for every time you think of me I'm right there in your heart.
All our love and prayers to you guys. so very sorry.

I am so saddened and heartbroken at the loss of Karl. It was a privilege to be his 3rd grade teacher and he left lasting memories on my heart. It was awesome to watch him increase his love of reading. I also loved seeing him and his brother at the baseball fields. They always said hello and weren't embarrassed to see their teacher. I am so sorry that we lost him so soon. May your family feel the love and peace that comes through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

We send our continuing love and prayers for your wonderful family, and are so sorry for this loss. I think Karl might have accomplished more in 13 years than I did by the time I was 20. Such an amazing kid! He will be missed and loved, always. We are eager to help in anyway we can, ask freely. We are just giving the family space to process this loss until then. We love you all.

Dear Finch Family,
Karl was an amazing boy and he shouldn't have suffered what he did. I didnt know him as well as some people for sure. However, I knew him pretty darn well. Enough to know that he would make a mark on the world. God has a plan for us all. This was his journey.
