1942 ~ 2025
Saturday Sep 27, 2025: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Larry, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away unexpectedly, following a heart attack while doing what he loved: golfing with his good friends, the “Dirty Eights.” He was surrounded by his family and friends when he passed on August 14, 2025.
Born on September 11, 1942, in Watertown, South Dakota, Larry grew up in Gettysburg where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Marilyn in 1956. Larry graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1959. They then moved to Mitchell, South Dakota where he received his BA Degree at Dakota Wesleyan. Larry's career in finance led him to positions at Miles Laboratory in Elkhart, Indiana, and later at Xerox, where he worked in various locations, including Rochester, New York, Dallas, Texas (where he received his Master’s Degree at SMU) and London, England. His early retirement brought him and his family to Sandy, Utah, where Larry became a successful entrepreneur, launching several businesses, including Hotel Sales, Highland Equipment, Matts Pawn Shop, Central Pallet, and more. He also found joy in his Ostrich farm and raising Tennessee Walkers in Lehi, Utah.
Larry's passions extended beyond business. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and horseback riding in the Utah mountains. After retiring, he found his greatest joy on the golf course. If he wasn’t studying the game, he was “teeing” off with his friends in Utah and Arizona, where he loved to spend his winters.
A man of great integrity and dedication, Larry was honored to serve as an Honorary Colonel. He was treasurer for both the Salt Lake and West Valley City Honorary Colonels for several years. His commitment to the organization was unwavering, and his colleagues remember him as a man of kindness, honor, and steady leadership. As one of his fellow Honorary Colonels put it, “Larry’s absence leaves a void that can never truly be filled, but his legacy of service and compassion will live on in the work we continue to do in his honor.”
Larry’s selflessness extended to every part of his life, from his family to his community. He was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a “gentle man.” Larry is preceded in death by his son, Lance, and his parents, Frank and Almyra VonWald.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Marilyn; his daughters Robin, Lori, and Leisa; daughter-in-law Kristen; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way); and numerous other family, and friends. Larry's memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones, and his legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Please join us for an open house Celebration of Larry’s Life on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Carmine’s Ristorante, 2477 Fort Union Boulevard, from 2 pm until 5 pm.
In honor of Larry, donations can be made to Salt Lake Honorary Colonels https://www.venmo.com/u/SLHC1
What a wonderful life Larry lived being a decent and respectful human. More people like him in this world would make it a much better place.
Wish I had known him a lot longer than I did.

So sorry I won’t be in town to celebrate Larry’s life with you. I love you guys and have you in my prayers and am sending big hugs
Larry meant a lot to Don and I. We have enjoyed our friendship and endeavors. What a great friend and man Larry was. We will cherish our get togethers and time in New York and cruise along with our cherised outings for dinner and drinks. Don and Larry spent many times golfing and making memories with the Dirty Eight. Larry will be solely missed in our hearts.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Hi Marilyn, I was so shocked and sad to hear of the death of Larry. You and your family have my deepest sympathy. remembering you in my prayers. Hope to see you this fall in Arizona. Love, Judy.
Larry was kindly welcome me to his home as his daughter, Leisa’s friend 26-7 years ago. He’s an altruistic individual! And He’s also one wise business person! It’s such a blessed to have chance to know him! I’d such a great memory and I’d learn so much! Now that he took a journey to the next Chapter! May the light shine his way to wherever he want to be! And surrounded with everyone he love and love him! We’ll meet again someday!

Marilyn and Family,
We send our deepest sympathy on the passing of Larry. I remember him and all of you in London fondly. My father often spoke of him and always with the utmost esteem. Unfortunately, Terry will be able unable to attend his Celebration of Life as he has just passed away this week. I know he was really planning to try to get there to attend.
