Lucille Modeen Sorenson Hughes
September 28, 1920 - August 3, 2024
Aged 103 years, 10 months, and 5 days, Lucille Modeen Sorenson Hughes waltzed peacefully from this world on August 3, 2024. She passed away in her sleep, in her own bed, in her “own four walls” as she liked to say. Likewise, Lucille was born at home. She debuted bright and early on September 28, 1920 in Gunnison, Utah. Her parents were Andrew Peter and Mary Iness.
Lucille taught fifth grade for 28 years at Highland Park Elementary school. She loved to teach about monarch butterflies and state capitals and was frequently complimented on her fine penmanship. Lucille resided on the same street in Sugarhouse for nearly 60 years. She wed Moyal G. Sorenson in 1942 in the Manti Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As highschool sweethearts they loved dancing to big band music throughout their youth. Lucille and Moyal were the parents of three children. Moyal passed away from a heart attack in 1955. She wed Ronald E. Hughes in 1964, who died in 1996. Ron’s daughter Nancy and her husband Carl preceded Lucille in death. Nancy and her posterity were Lucille’s “bonus family.” Lucille was also predeceased by sons-in-law Scott and Nelson.
Lucille is remembered and missed by her children, Kendra, Kelly (Deena), and Kaye. Those three kids blessed her with 15 grandchildren who benefitted from Gram’s abundant love, high expectations, and never-ending encouragement. Those 15 grandkids brought about 49 great-grandchildren. She also leaves her dearest friend since childhood, also named Lucille and aged 103.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Aspen Ridge Hospice, and to friends Ashlyn, Luis and Laura, and Brooklyn, whose caring allowed Lucille to remain in her "own four walls."
One of Lucille's favorite sayings was "A job worth doing is worth doing well."
Gram, you did well.
Guestbook/Condolences
No tribute can be stronger than her life and example. Lucille greeted everyone with a smile. A truly magnificent woman. Though Janicka and I are traveling and won’t be there we offer our deepest condolences and love to the family.
I am so sorry about your loss. I was surprised how old she was. My condolences and prayers are with you all.
Mrs. Sorenson (as I knew her) was my fifth grade teacher at Highland Park in the 1960s. She was the best! There was something very special about her. My sincere condolences to her family. A life well lived.
