Annette Shurtleff Hatch

1930 ~ 2018

Our angel wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and beloved friend passed away peacefully of causes incident to age, March 23rd, 2018, at the age of 87, surrounded at home by her loving family. She was born September 9, 1930, to Marion Burt, and Wilford Elijah Shurtleff. She was brought home to 1751 Herbert Avenue, where she lived until she married. She loved her neighborhood and would tell stories of her growing up days. She attended Uintah Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High, and East High, graduating in 1947. She continued her studies at The University of Utah, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1951. She affiliated with Alpha Chi Omega while at the U of U, where years later, she made and donated, a large lyre crest stained glass window to the chapters at both the U of U and Utah State University. Her first quarter of college, while attending an event at the institute of religion, she met a tall, dark handsome boy, Joseph Lloyd Hatch. It turns out that they had walked the halls of East High together, but had never met until that fateful day at the institute activity at the Flandro home. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, on July 30th, 1951. Their sealing was officiated by Elder Joseph Fielding Smith. Joe had already completed one year of medical school at Temple University, so after their nuptials, Annette headed east with her new husband to begin a life as the wife of a medical student. She worked as a substitute teacher In the Philadelphia School System that first year. Joseph Floyd, and Charles Bradford arrived during their medical school days, and Heidi and Annette were born in Chicago, Illinois, during Joe's ophthalmology residency. During those years away, Annette learned to love the flowers and blossoming trees that were native to the humid climates. They included her favorite, the Dogwood.

The family returned to Salt Lake City in 1960, where Carolyn Susan, Timothy Earl, and Paul Shurtleff were born. She was always a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she served in the relief society, young women's and primary. She and Joe served as a mission couple in New Zealand in 2002 - 2003.

Annette became involved in many clubs, including The Cleofan, Literary Art Guild, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and the Hawaiian Club where she made lifelong friends. Annette was a cabin maid in Moran, Wyoming, and developed a love for the Tetons. She worked at the curio shop in Bryce Canyon Lodge and Pembrokes in Salt Lake City. Her hobbies were delightful. She was an artist and created beautiful paintings, stained glass creations, and pottery. She made curtains that had been woven and sewn, incorporating her angora rabbit fur, which she carded, spun and then wove on her loom. She created a Christmas diorama for her front lawn. There was not an obstacle that she wouldn't tackle, such as a 30 foot flag pole at the home. The beautiful shag living room carpet was cut into squares, washed at the laundromat, and glued back together. She blasted out walls with a sledge hammer to enlarge closets. Her industrial sewing machine frightened Joe and the dog. Her numerous upholstery efforts were punctuated by loud air compressor activity. She loved animals and encouraged the children to raise rabbits, goats, ducks, geese, and pigeons plus produce, and encouraged the children to care for them and enter them into the Utah State Fair. They and many of the neighbors became skillful goat milkers. And of course there was the backyard swimming pool, where hours of fun, birthday parties and family parties were relished. Her children knew that she could do anything and we grew up believing that we could too, because of her example.

Her greatest attribute was her kindness. She was a giver and so supportive of Joe's and her children's many adventures.

Annette is survived by her 24 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. Her children - Floyd (Carol) Hatch, Brad (Mary Ann) Hatch, Annette (Bob) Nichols, and Tim (Kami) Hatch and son-in-law - Craig Ford. She was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter - Ruby Lee Hatch, her children - Heidi Hatch Ford, Paul Hatch, her brother - Burt Shurtleff, her sister - Carolyn Bonner, her parents, and her parents-in-law - Donnette Lloyd and Floyd Frost Hatch.
