Matthew Daniel Sperry of Salt Lake City passed away in Mexico on January 11, 2021 at age 27. Matthew, our pumpkin baby, was born on October 13, 1993 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Richard Jones Sperry and Janet LeFevre Sperry. Matthew was born in the covenant and is sealed eternally to his family.

Matthew is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a missionary in Rancagua, Chile. He enjoyed speaking Spanish and used the language to his advantage after returning home.

We have so many good memories of Matthew. He loved playing golf and baseball. He worked extremely hard to be a member of the golf and baseball teams at East High School. Matthew was passionate about good food (as he defined it). He made BBQ chicken wings and “crispies” (corn dogs) at home. He craved ice-cream more than most. But even more than good food, golf and baseball, Matthew loved his family and his nephews. They also loved him. They brought him great joy. Matthew had a unique bond with his parents and loved them greatly.

Matthew’s family, friends, and co-workers cherish memories of his engaging, boisterous, and loving personality. His immediate and extended family are profoundly grateful for his life and will miss him beyond measure. He was an integral part of our lives and his influence upon us will be eternal.

He is survived by his parents, his siblings Jared, Jessica (Philip Plumb), Melissa, Jason (Rosemary), and his four nephews Sam, Daniel, Calvin and Kimball. He is also survived by his grandmother Carol Sperry, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was lucky to have a large and loving extended family.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandfather Arthur Sperry, grandparents Daniel and Virginia LeFevre, and an uncle, Mark Sperry.

Matthew’s wish would be for everyone to be able to meet together, but due to Covid restrictions, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm for immediate family and invited guests.

Sperry is one of my best friends and I will miss him very much. My heart goes to his family and to him. I grew up with Matthew and could always count on him. Whether scouts, work, school, church, sports, girls, parents, friends, teachers ... sperry was always my go to friend to confront any force. We got into allot of trouble together but we also got out of trouble together. I love you brother and will miss you very much.

Matthew has been a childhood and neighborhood friend my entire life! My absolute favorite thing about him was his always happy and contagious laugh and smile! Matthew was a great friend to all and had such a special relationship with everyone that knew him. He knew how to enjoy life and make the best of every situation. Thinking of his family at this time and I am so grateful for the plan of salvation and to know that friends and family can see him again.

Sperry was one of a kind. He was always joking and having fun. He had a way of being able to make light of almost any situation but when he couldn’t, he was right there to offer comfort and words of wisdom. He loved life and cared deeply about his family and Friends. You will be greatly missed. I send my most sincere condolences to the Sperry family during this time as his loss is deeply felt by so many. May you find comfort in how much Sperry was loved and how great of a life he truly lived. Rest in paradise brother.

Seeing that Matthew passed stopped my heart. I was just laughing at his jokes and reminiscing with him last week. He was always the most hilarious person in the room and I’ll never forget his laugh, or the adventures we've made since elementary. RIP Sperry. The world just lost a little bit of sparkle ✨

- Quinn Price

Makes me so sad to hear, he was always so kind to me and always lit up the room. I wasn’t the closet friend to him, but he definitely was a great person to be around, always put a smile on my face!
Rest In Peace Matthew.

- Scott Bringhurst

I always loved playing whiffle ball with Matthew and kids, and mom loved having them play.

I will greatly miss my friend Matthew Sperry and I send my deepest condolences to his family. Matthew was always a joy to be with. His happiness and smile were contagious. I was particularly close to him during our times together playing baseball at East High and when he returned home from his mission. He had a significant impact on my journey to serve a mission. I will remember him fondly and I rejoice in the hope that his spirit lives on. Until we meet again brother!

- Parker Van Dyke

Sorry for your loss.

Richard and Janet, I’m so incredibly sorry to hear about Matthew. I have many fun memories of him from Bonneville. I lost my oldest son, Josh, in July and I know the incredible pain, sorrow and disbelief you are feeling. Parents shouldn’t ever have to experience this. We also had a small memorial service with Zoom and it ended up being amazing. So many people joined us and shared memories. A friend of Josh’s also started a Josh Lewis Memorial page in Facebook that has been a fantastic way to meet and stay in touch with Josh’s friends. That might be something that would help you through this. My heart is with you. Kathy Lewis

Dear Sperry family, Jane and I and the rest of our family were stunned and saddened at the passing of Matt. We have known him for so many years here in our neighborhood and ward. As has been said by others, he always had such a wonderful smile and happiness about him that was contagious. Jane, who taught him in primary briefly, said that he often had a mischievous twinkle in his eye and had a wonderful sweetness and gentle kindness about him. He was always outgoing and friendly. We will miss him and pray that the Lord‘s blessings will be with all of you. We love you!

- Marc and Jane Sanders

My childhood would not have been what it was without cousins like Matthew and his brothers and sisters.
I babysat Matthew and Jason. Our families went on vacations together. We had countless canyon campfire gatherings.
The Sperry family is in our prayers. We love you. We will miss Matthew.

- Andy Brough

My heart goes out to the Sperry family. I grew up just a street away from the Sperry's and always remembered Matthew as a little kid with a lot of attitude. He was my younger brother's age and I would see him from time to time. Then life happened, and I didn't see Matthew for probably 10 or so years until I ran into him working at Zions Bank. I didn't recognize him, but he introduced himself to me and we made the connection. Over the next couple years I had a number of interactions with Matthew and each time I was taken aback at how much Matthew had changed since I knew him in his youth. He was beyond helpful, and an absolute joy to and had so much light in his eyes. I'm heartbroken to hear of his passing. I'll truly miss running into him.

- Sean Swenson

Matthew was one of a kind. He always found a way to bring a smile to people’s faces. He was a genuine person and a great friend. He will be deeply missed.

While I have many memories of Matthew, my favorite was his friendly demeanor and his smile. I was lucky to be able to call him my cousin. My love and condolences go out to the Sperry's

Dear wonderful Sperry Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Mathews passing. Over the years I saw him frequently at the Body Wise Gym and appreciated his effervescent, friendly personality. I also observed how happy Perla, another trainer at our gym who is from Latin America,, enjoyed chatting with him in her native language. I felt his goodness.
Also, in reading his obituary, I learned more of his interests and the wonderful parenting he received from your loving hearts. I have such respect for you and all you have lived as a bonded family-
my prayers are with you in these days of transition. Lastly, I will be glad to see Mathew again someday in our Heavenly Home!
Much Love,
Andrea Paulsen

I had the privilege of being Matthew's soccer coach for many years. I feel like he's one of my boys. Soccer wasn't his primary sport, but he gave it everything, in every game. He lifted his team when times were down. Brought a smile to my face when he would challenge an opposing center forward. He often tormented opponents and I'd see him turn away for a moment with a wry smile and give me a little head flick to assure me he was working every angle. Matthew was a great teammate. He laughed hard. His eyes sparkled with being with his friends. In recent years, he would light up my day when I would see him at Zions Bank. The eyes would sparkle again when he saw me. He'd take care of my business, but work in a funny quip and I'd go on with my day. He lifted me for those moments, just like when he was on the soccer field. Rest in Peace dear Matthew. God Bless your wonderful supportive family. You will be together again.

- Des Barker

Rest In Peace Matt. I am so lucky to have met him. Such a fun and out going person. Thanks for making my work days more exciting.

- Jorgi R

There are so many memories I have of Matthew but in many of them he was smiling and making us all laugh. He was always there with a hug and a genuine 'how are you' whenever I saw him. He even made sure to get my attention at a Utah game in the crowded concourse to say hello. From playing together as kids, to our family vacations, to laughing about our crazy moms, to just sitting together eating meals, he was a great person to be around.

He is the kind of cousin everyone should have and I will miss him a lot. Sending all of our love and prayers.

Michelle, Alex & Lily.

- Michelle Harris

Where do I even begin?! Matthew was an amazing friend and someone I always wanted to be around. So many memories, from little league and high school sports, sluffing seminary, weekend hangouts and sleepovers, our trip to Saint George, golfing, the MTC and much, much more. It's difficult to think of a hilarious high school memory without Matthew involved - nobody could make me laugh like he could! I'm grateful I was able to get together with "Sper Bear" a couple more times recently, those were the highlights of my 2020. My condolences to the Sperry family for this tragic loss. I will always cherish my memories with Matthew. God be with you 'til we meet again!

- Miles Waltman

What a phenomenal being is Matthew Sperry!
From the day Matt was born, he has inspired, cheered, motivated and gladdened the hearts of all who have known him...thus far!
No-doubt, Matt is doing the same already in his new home, having just temporarily moved to another, happy sphere.
We have admired Matt throughout his life, having had the privilege of sharing of his spirit and enthusiasm in Church classes, as neighbors, around school settings, and on Scout camps.
We are confident in his continued great future, as a noble son of God.
And, we exult pondering the privilege to see him again, someday soon.
May the Good Lord continue to comfort, cheer and embrace Matt's Family, as we know He will.
With Love, Terese and Dave Cracroft

- David Cracroft

Mathew was my closest friend, I would even consider him my brother. I don’t think I would be the person I am today if he wasn’t in my life. He always brought the beat out in me and always was able to put a smile on my face even in my darkest of times. Mathew was definitely one of a kind. He spoke so highly of his family, I regret never becoming closer with them, but I send my deepest condolences and love towards all the Sperry’s. He will truly be missed.

Matt was a few years older than me, but I have so many funny memories of him from our neighborhood. Some of my favorites are from when we all took the bus to Lowell for a year in elementary school while Bonneville was under reconstruction. He would joke around with our bus driver Karen and made everyone on the bus laugh so hard! I remember thinking I was on the coolest bus because we had Matt Sperry on it. I am sending love to your family and know that I am one of so many people who is thinking fondly of Matt today.

- Nell Stevens

Dear Sperry Family,

I am so saddened to hear about Matthew's passing. I had the privilege of having Matthew in my primary class for two years. I taught the 7-year olds, who were preparing for baptism, and the same children in the 8-year old class. Such an impressionable and special age. I remember Matthew as a bright light and someone who even at a young age loved the Savior. He was so excited to be baptized! I also know he loved his family so much. I pray you will feel comforted. You are in my heart at this time.

Sending my love,

Dearest Sperrys,

My heart is broken hearing about your tragic loss! Matthew was such a staple in my childhood. Age didn’t matter those long summer days of elementary school, as we all played and roamed back and forth from each other’s homes. My childhood scrapbooks are full of photos and memories with Matthew. He was just too funny, wild, obnoxious, and energetic to even handle sometimes, but always the life of the party. I will always cherish my memories and the good times with Matthew.
I have so much love for all of you and sympathize with the grief you are feeling. I will look forward to the time our paths can cross again and I can offer the biggest hug or shoulder to cry on!

Love, Caitlin

I send my most sincere condolences to this very family that I love them with my whole heart.

- Virginia Wootan

Dear Sperry Family,
I want to send my deepest condolences and let you know what a beautiful service you provided for your son and Brother. Having the good fortune of working with Mathew and his friends over the years through scouting, young mens and as a neighbor, I got to see first hand what a kind and special person he is. As one who loves to laugh, he always kept me smiling....or in stitches. I absolutely love that boy! To this day, my sons, (Nick and Max) and I still share stories of his humor and kindness. He was always so good to them. As an upper classmate, he helped Nick feel welcome and a part of the golf team, often going out of his way to ensure he had rides to practice and participated in their evening team-bonding activities. That meant a ton to Nick; and to me and Kris. When I was asked to "coach" the ward basketball team, Max, was just a little tike, but he loved going to games, primarily because Mathew made him feel so welcome and accepted. It's not often a popular, athletic, teenager pays much attention to a quiet little kid, but Mathew wasn't a typical teenager. Seeing his kind and loving nature as he interacted with Max, making him feel important, was inspiring and heartwarming.

Though it seems he may have left this earthly realm a little early, his infectious smile, kindheartedness and enthusiastic personality, certainly made it a better place for the rest of us. I know I'm a better person for knowing him.

May peace and comfort be with you,
Brett Neuberger

- Brett Neuberger

Dear Sperry Family,
We were saddened to learn of Matthew's passing and at the same time we are grateful for the time we were able to spend with him.
His warm and engaging personality, and his kindness to everyone are qualities that we hope our own sons will emulate. Matt was always very patient, kind and generous of his time to and with Will and Spencer. Matt's positive interactions with them reflect how compassionate Matt was here on earth and how he will treat and help all those he encounters for eternity.
