  • Michael Paul Osterloh, 58, of Sandy, Utah, passed away on December 10, 2021. He was surrounded by family in his home, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Mike was born to Fred and Gayle on June 7, 1963, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Growing up, he loved sailing his Hobie Cat and skiing in the Wasatch mountains. Mike graduated from Skyline High School. He later studied in Jerusalem through Brigham Young University, where he developed a passion for Middle Eastern history and politics. Mike served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Helsinki, Finland. He then continued his studies at Brigham Young University where he graduated from the Accounting Program and met his sweetheart, Denice. They were married in the Oakland Temple on November 22, 1986. Mike studied law at the University of San Diego and later received his Master of Laws in taxation at the University of the Pacific in Sacramento, California. He passed the bar in both California and Utah. After practicing law, Mike followed his father's footsteps and became involved in the restaurant business to operate Su Casa Mexican restaurant. In 2008, he and Denice opened the Salt City Burger Company.

Mike was outnumbered by eight daughters and had the misfortune of watching more Romcoms than any man should endure in one lifetime. He loved teaching his daughters how to ski, sail, play tennis, and golf. He instilled in them the importance of hard work and diligence in pursuing their life’s passions. Mike loved discussing history, politics, and was a witty conversationalist. One of his favorite pastimes was exchanging sarcastic banter or engaging in in-depth conversations in the kitchen. He was genuinely interested in conversing with anyone who crossed his path. He made anyone who entered their home feel important and a part of the family. Mike was a lifelong learner, with a constant desire to stay tuned on world politics and current events.

Whether it was building a new grill for his restaurant or developing his own POS software, he was always a self-learner with a drive to master new skills. He had a strong testimony in Jesus Christ and His gospel, which was reflected in his desire and willingness to serve others alongside Denice. Mike was well known for always having a camera in hand and documenting life around him. His enthusiasm for knowledge and adventure was contagious and will continue through his girls. He dedicated his life to his wife and daughters and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Denice, and eight daughters: Megan (Isaac) Paulsen, Jessica (Blake) Balkman, Kathryn (Drew) Crawford, Rachel, Madeline, Sarah, Emily, Grace, and five grandchildren. Also survived by his mother, Gayle Osterloh, and his brothers: Rick (Brenda) Osterloh, Craig (Kimiko) Osterloh, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Osterloh.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2021, from 11:00-12:00 pm at the Granite View Stake Center, 9880 South 3100 East, Sandy, UT 84092. Viewings will be held on Friday evening, December 17, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Gardens, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S.), Sandy, UT 84092 and Saturday morning from 10:00-10:45 am at the church, prior to services. Interment to follow Larkin Sunset Gardens.

I’m so sorry to learn of Brother Osterloh’s passing. I know that he suffered a great deal, and it is a blessing that his pain is now over. From my own personal experience, our family knows what it is to lose a husband and father, and I know that Heavenly Father will bless you with His comforting spirit. Indeed we are so fortunate to know that life is eternal and that we will see our loved ones again.
    With much love,

Mike was a great friend. Although we have not stayed "close," I still value the countless hours Mike and I spent on the slopes and learning from each other when photography also required darkroom skills. His sense of humor combined with a serious passion for doing things well were an example to me. I will miss him. My thoughts, prayers, and sincere condolences are with Denice and their family.

So sorry to hear about Mike’s mighty struggle and passing. I knew Mike while on the Jerusalem Study Abroad Program. He is a wonderfully talented and intelligent man. I also remember him being adventurous and fun, always up for new experiences. My faith is he will continue to develop his talents and continue to learn on the other side of the veil, which will be all new experiences for him.
Prayers and condolences for his sweet family at this tender time.

To the Osterloh Family, my deepest sympathies for your loss. I grew up going to Su Casa and at the age of 15 started working there, and continued for 10 years through high school and college. I’ll always remember Mike as a kind man, valuing his employees and showing genuine interest in their well being and lives. He always remembered what was going on in my life and would ask how it was going, and I had great respect for him and his character. My favorite memory of him was when he tried to use used vegetable oil from the restaurant to fuel the big family van. He was creative and always thinking of new ideas. Your family will be in my prayers as you start to navigate this new normal.
