Paul Douglas Holt died at home on June 17, 2025 of cancer at the age of 90. He was born on was born on December 12, 1934 in Salt Lake City to Paul Matthew Holt and Carol Reid Holt. Doug grew up in Salt Lake near the University of Utah on 12th East. Growing up, he and his family had a strong connection to the resort community of Wildwood in Provo Canyon near Sundance where his grandfather, Edward Henry Holt, built a cabin in 1908. As a child and throughout his life, many happy summers were spent making memories in that beautiful setting, with generations of Holt children spending time there as well.
Doug joined the Navy Reserve Officer Training Core (ROTC) in high school. He was a graduate of East High School and the University of Utah with a degree in Marketing. Doug attended the University of Utah on an ROTC scholarship and had a three year service commitment on graduation. He married in June 1956 and following his marriage he was assigned the United States Navy base at Taipei, Taiwan to fill his ROTC commitment. He served in Taiwan as a Communication Watch Officer in the US Navy with rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He became a dad for the first time in Taiwan in September 1957 when his son Ken was born. He had six other children Kathy, Tracy, born in Salt Lake City; Colleen, Curtis, born in Twin Falls, Idaho; and Rebecca and Ann, born in Bountiful, Utah. After returning home from Taiwan he had career in sales working for Playtex, Brunswick, Warner Lambert, and in the securities industry. Divorced in 1979.
Doug met and married Nadine Featherstone on March 21, 1980. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in October 1997. Doug and Nadine loved traveling the world and enjoyed visiting countries in Europe, South America, China, the Caribbean and Russia to name just a few. One of their favorite trips was to Israel. They served a temple mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Washington DC and were faithful temple workers in the Draper, Utah temple for many years. Doug loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many church callings throughout his lifetime.
Music was an enduring passion of Doug’s. He played piano and sang in many choirs. He had a great love for Broadway musicals and some of his favorites were Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Carousal, and Music Man. He was sucker for a good love song. He delighted in seeing his daughter Rebecca in the Broadway production of ‘How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ (starring Matthew Broadrick) three times! It won the Tony for best musical in 1995.
Doug and Nadine had cherished friendships with Dick and Kay Randall and Mark and Marlena Lewis, among other close friends. Many happy memories were made attending U of U football and basketball games and vacationing together with the Randalls and Lewis’. Doug loved golf! He golfed for decades with his buddies Dick Randall and Jim Featherstone and his son Curtis. He also enjoyed fishing the North Fork of the Provo River at Wildwood, bowling, playing tennis, softball, and basketball.
Doug had an unwavering devotion to the University of Utah and was a Crimson Club member. He was an avid supporter of all Utah sports, but especially football and basketball. If anyone ever filled the definition of a ‘UTAH MAN’ it was Doug. He and Nadine traveled to away games as often as they could. He was a very loving dad, even when it came to Utah vs BYU sports. Whenever Utah would beat BYU he would never call his oldest son Ken (a BYU fan) and rub it in. They both knew who won the game and not much needed to be said.
Doug was a family man. He loved his parents, siblings, children, step children and grandchildren and was so proud of their accomplishments. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Nadine, who has tenderly loved him and cared for him over the past 45 years, but increasingly so during the past 3 years of his illness ; his seven children Ken (Barbara) Holt, Kathy (Scott) Freeman, Tracy (Wayne) Callister, Colleen (Gene) Kartchner, Curtis (Kim) Holt, Becky (Don) Gilmore and Ann Holt; four stepchildren Lorna Lee Hall, Karen Lindsey, Beverly (Scott) Martin and Jerry (Kellie) Knight; 39 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. Also survived by his younger siblings Suzanne Christensen and Ed (Pam) Holt. Preceded in death by his parents Paul Matthew Holt and Carol Reid Holt.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Nadine for her constant and loving care for these many months, along with her daughter Lorna who has been a great support in caring for Doug. Special thanks to Carlos and Laura from Active Hospice who have been such a support and made Doug’s last days peaceful and at ease. We are all grateful.
