Listen to Obituary
Paul Shino, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Sandy, Utah on July 21, 2025. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 6, 1950 to Tom Tsutomu Shino and Ann Mineko Suenobu Shino. Paul is survived by his wife of 32 years, Valerie Shino, his four children; Toshiro Shino, Tomoji Shino, Takashi Shino, and Mineko Ferrier-Watson, his seven siblings; Jean Hollis, Alan Shino, Karen Bahde, Russell Shino, Naomi Nessen, Linda Cazier, Wayne Shino, as well as his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Paul was a notorious work-a-holic but he also enjoyed life to the fullest with many hobbies such as fishing and golfing. He was an avid reader and loved adventure, traveling extensively with his wife and friends. Paul was baptized as one of Jehovah's witnesses September 7th of 2002. Paul could best be described as a man of character. The definition of Character is; The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
A man of GOOD character: someone who consistently demonstrates positive traits and values in his actions and interactions. Paul Shino.
A man of STRONG character: Someone with positive traits that contributes to an individual's overall integrity, resilience and ethical behavior. Paul Shino.
A Real Character: Someone unique, interesting, or unconventional in their personality or behavior. Paul Shino.
Reflecting on Paul gives anyone who knew him a chance to smile. A chance to cry. A chance to hope. Paul's strength, drive and resilience were worthy of emulation. Of course as a young man, Paul had these characteristics. But after his stroke in 2009, these qualities helped Paul defy the odds. Paul was not defined by his stroke, rather he was able to redefine his life in spite of the stroke. While challenging new limitations surfaced, the emphasis was never on what Paul couldn't do but what Paul COULD do . Even under trial, Paul got things done with style.
It is known that diamonds are formed from pure carbon under immense pressure and heat. Like a diamond, when put under life's pressure and heat, what was purely Paul became beautiful, sparkled, and was unique. The people in his life got to experience that with each and every interaction. His value remains priceless.
He was not a quitter. Some may submit to defeat under such circumstances, however Paul rose above. He faced his challenges with courage and positivity. His kindness never failed. Paul affectionately referred to his female friends as his “Beautiful sisters”, His male friends were his “Handsome Brothers.” Caretakers, therapists, nurses and Doctors all experienced Paul's cleverness and charm. Even upon hospitalizations, Paul's generosity shined through, as he equally gave to his caretakers treats, hope and of course, jokes. Paul treated others the way he wanted to be treated. Certainly not with pity, but with joy, candor, and humor. He was completely confident that his suffering was only temporary. The real life was yet to come. One of perfect health, peace, unity and of course, lots of joy.
There's no way around it. Paul was a real character in the truest form. He had the sliest sense of humor. He was playful and he loved teasing those around him. But even on difficult days, he entertained his friends with jingles – questionable jingles – Geese, monkeys, boats... Those who know the song might have it stuck in their heads. He wanted his friends to be happy and to get a kick out of each and every day.
Evidence suggests a sense of humor and engaging in laughter has positive health benefits, including longevity. Thanks for showing us how it's done Paul! We look forward to seeing you again when we can once again enjoy your company and be recipients of your kindness and admirers of your strength, faith and integrity.

To Sister Valerie Shino and the entire Shino family,
What a beautiful, faith-strengthening life our dear Brother Paul Shino lived. Just reading about him, I couldn’t help but smile, laugh a little, and even shed a tear. There’s no question—Brother Shino’s spirit, strength, and character reflected something deeply rare and deeply precious in Jehovah’s eyes.
When I think of Brother Shino, I think of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the fine fight, I have run the race to the finish, I have observed the faith.” After his stroke, he didn’t give up—he rose up. Not only enduring but redefining the boundaries with courage, joy, and that signature charm. That’s the mark of a true servant of Jehovah: one who keeps his integrity, even under intense pressure. A diamond indeed.
Jehovah lovingly treasures those who remain joyful and faithful under trial. As James 1:12 reminds us, “Happy is the man who keeps on enduring trial, because on becoming approved he will receive the crown of life.” Brother Shino surely wore that “crown” in the way he faced life’s challenges—with wit, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
And yet, we know this isn’t the end. This is just a pause. Brother Shino believed, as we do, in the life to come—the one Jehovah promises: a world without pain, without sickness, without tears. A world where “no resident will say: ‘I am sick’” (Isaiah 33:24), and where Brother Shino’s jokes and jingles will once again echo with laughter, not in a hospital room, but in a peaceful paradise.
Until that glorious resurrection morning, may Jehovah surround you with peace, sustain you with His Spirit, and remind you—daily—that you are never alone. The bond of the brotherhood and the comfort of Jehovah’s promises are holding you close.
With warm love and deep affection,
Your brother in the faith
Kevin

Paul was a very loving husband, brother, son, uncle, father and grandfather. He was a workaholic in the truest sense...definitely a hard worker and dedicated to his family and to America! He served in Desert Storm while stationed in Germany as a laboratory technician for the military. Paul was also an avid long distance runner while at Granite High School and placed 6th in state during his senior year there. He also ran for the Army in the military games in San Antonio, TX, after he initially enlisted. Interestingly, he had the largest head in his unit and his hats were special made to fit!
I will miss you, bro!
Lovingly,
Sis
