Listen to Obituary

Phyllis Abplanalp Chatwin, age 106, passed peacefully in her home on Friday, December 10, 2021 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born in Devil’s Slide, Utah to William W. Abplanalp and Ida Huber on May 6, 1915. She spent her youth in Ogden, Utah. She attended the University of Utah, then Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. She married Willis Chatwin, later divorced. They had one daughter. Phyllis worked as a secretary until retiring in 1985. She was the ultimate hostess and loved cooking for others. She enjoyed shopping, eating out, and traveling. Midway and the Tetons were especially dear to her heart. However, her family always came first. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She lived a life of positivity, generosity and always with a concern for others more than for herself.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Peterson (Lynn), granddaughters Leslie Wilkey (Scott), Linette Sheffield (David), and Jill Nielson (Stephen); also 9 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Kenneth Abplanalp, and a sister Marion A. Shaw.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 20 at the Yalecrest Second Ward, 1035 South 1800 East, Salt Lake City, Utah at 12 noon with a viewing at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Guestbook/Condolences

Linda and family, I am sorry to hear about your mom. She was a great lady. I remember the times we would go to her house on Christmas night for a little get together, we always looked forward to it. She was a great friend to my grandfather Lee for many, many years.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

Aunt Linda,

Your mother was always so kind and gracious. Whenever she came to our family functions she treated everyone with so much care and concern. She had a happy and positive demeanor that always lifted me up. I will cherish the memories I have of her. I send my deepest and most heart-felt condolences to you, Uncle Lynn, Leslie, Linette, Jill, and the rest of your family.

Love,
Doug, Angie Gardner and family

We were so privileged to know and enjoy Phyllis for many years. She was an honored guest at our home on many occasions and we were always impressed with her continual optimism and energy. She met the vicissitudes of life head on with no turning back. Life was for her a never ending forward process. She never let age stand in the way of living her life fully and independently. She was an example to those of us now experiencing the inevitable downward trek and aches and pains of senior citizenship. We will miss her and at the same time remember her with fondness. May her memory be blessed and revered always.

Linda, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. You have my deepest sympathy. When my mother passed several years ago, I found myself headed to her house for spaghetti every Wednesday, which I had done for years, only to remember half way there that she was gone. It has been a long time since the old Garfield Avenues and South High School days! My best to you and Pete for the holidays, and I hope to bump into the two of you one of these days.

My best,

Leonard
