1941 ~ 2025
Saturday Oct 18, 2025: 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM
Ralph Evans Jackson, a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, beloved husband, father, and accomplished civil engineer with a lifelong passion for mass transportation, passed away peacefully at his home in South Jordan, Utah, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the age of 83. He died from complications of Parkinson’s disease, surrounded by the tender care and love of his wife, Claudia.
Ralph Evans Jackson was born on November 13, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fourth of ten children of Taylor and Marjorie Jackson. Shortly after his birth, the family relocated to Denver, Colorado, where Ralph spent his formative years. He was an active and well-rounded youth — playing little league football and baseball, mastering the clarinet, and distinguishing himself as a talented athlete on his high school ski team.
After graduating from high school, Ralph moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University, where he met and fell in love with Sheila Houlihan. Their relationship deepened as Sheila faithfully supported him during his three-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Berlin Germany Mission. Upon his return, they were civilly married in Wilmette, Illinois, in September 1963, and sealed a few days later in the Salt Lake Temple.
Ralph was cherished for his warmth, quiet strength, and humble leadership. Throughout his adult life, he served faithfully in numerous church callings which included bishop, stake president, branch president, and temple worker. In these callings, he was always supported by the love and encouragement of his wife and children.
As Ralph pursued his degree in civil engineering — beginning at Northwestern and later transferring to the University of Illinois, where he graduated in 1968 — he and Sheila began building their family. Ralph’s professional life was marked by vision and impact: he became a respected leader in mass transit, playing a pivotal role in the development of light rail and commuter rail systems in both Denver and Salt Lake City. His influence extended to landmark projects such as Denver’s 16th Street Mall and the engineering marvel of Glenwood Canyon in the Colorado Rockies, earning recognition for innovation and excellence.
In 2005, Ralph experienced the heartbreaking loss of Sheila, his beloved companion, following her brief battle with leukemia. In time, healing came through grace and connection. A cousin introduced Ralph to a dear friend, Claudia Black, and their friendship quickly blossomed into love. In October 2006, they united their families and were sealed in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. Together, Ralph and Claudia continued their lifelong commitment to church service, serving missions in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Mission and later at the Church Service Missionary Mission Office, where their shared devotion uplifted many.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife Sheila, stepdaughter Melissa Jessop, step-grandson Tyson Mathews, and his siblings Evan, Richard, and Evie. He is survived by his wife Claudia, children Evan Jackson (Bessie), Dan Jackson (Tina), Kimberly Small, Cyndy Garrison (Jim), and stepchildren Laurie Whiting (Brent), David Black (Dion), Kimberli Barrow (Jeff), Adam Black, Christopher Black, Jennifer Black, Triana Pledger (Jeremy), and Michael Black, as well as by 53 grandchildren and 68 great grandchildren.
Viewing to be held Friday, October 17th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 11038 Braidwood Dr., South Jordan, UT 84009. (Immediately behind the LDS Oquirrh Mountain Temple.) Another viewing Saturday, October 18th , prior to funeral services beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at Noon. Interment is to be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery located at 200 N Street E, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103.

We are so sorry to hear of his passing. Our deepest sympathy to his family.
Allan and I are saddened to learn of Ralph's passing. I remember many times when his family came from Denver and met with our family and our grandparents. Years later, we were overjoyed to learn that Ralph and Sheila were coming back to Denver. We had moved there with our family also. They were in our Ward and our children played together.
May your family be blessed with strength and comfort as you mourn the loss of this great man!
I first met Ralph in Berlin, Germany in July of 1961 where we were both serving as missionaries. One month later we witnessed the building of the Berlin Wall, a tragic and history changing event. Ralph was an energetic and devoted missionary. Unfortunately, after our missions ended, I saw Ralph only one or two times. But my good memories of him are still vivid in my mind. My condolences to his family.
My heart goes out to you.
Dan, I never met your dad but recall you speaking of him with love and respect. As I read his obituary it was easy to see how much you emulated him in your actions, devotion and faithfulness. You represented him well and I’m sorry for your loss.
Elder & Sister Jackson were the 1st Missionaries I ever met. In 2012 they explained the Spiritual realm to me with Suzan. Kind, wise, & funny folks. Love You
Ralph is among the top three of "Best Bosses" I have ever had the honor of working with! We loved him at UTA and he will long be memorialized for the whole "Program of Projects" for the infrastructure of public transportation in Utah. We couldn't have done it without him.
Sending my love to Claudia, Kym and family!
Ralph was a caring and important mentor to me at the Utah Transit Authority. He could see how my skills could fit into a need at the agency and helped me forge a path to a career there. I knew I could always go to him when something troubled me. He practiced and shared his wisdom, calm, smile, and life's experiences with all. My deepest condolences to all his family.
With such found memories,
Kerry Doane
Ralph was a gentle Giant in the transportation and transit world and we all stood on his shoulders. He was trusted and admired by all. His consequential contributions to Salt Lake's transit system was his commitment to this community that will last for generations to come. Our thanks and prayers to Ralph, Claudia and his entire family. Love, the Utah Transit Authority team.
Ralph and Claudia served their mission in our small Mansfield Branch. We send our love and prayers to his family.
My deepest condolences to the family for their lost, may Our Heavenly Father strengthen them.
I appreciate the most appropriate funeral service. Ralph and Sheila with their family lived about 3 blocks from us in Denver and we were in the Denver Third Ward together. I served with him as a Seventy, and as his Stake Executive Secretary. He also called me to serve as the Bishop of the Denver 20th Ward. As a friend and brother in the Gospel he certainly influenced my life for much good.
Dear f, my heartfelt condolences on the loss of Ralph. May the love and memories of him bring you comfort and peace during this difficult time. Sending you and the family my deepest sympathy."

Dear Claudia. We were saddened to hear of Ralph's passing and that we missed the funeral. We were in Finland at my Aunt's memorial service. Ralph was brilliant and such a good man.
We hope that you will feel the comfort of the Spirit and know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this time.
Love and hugs from Sirpa and Lorne
