Richard Edward Carman of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away peacefully on Friday August 30, 2024.
Richard was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 28th 1934 to Richard R. and Katherine Carman. He graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and continued courses at the University of Utah where through the ROTC program he was drafted and served 2 years in the US Army. Richard married his childhood sweetheart Mary Jane Garrick for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on April 13th 1956.
Richard worked as an HVACR contractor at Carman Refrigeration Inc, a company started with his father. He led an incredibly full life that included service to both community and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a Scoutmaster for 13 years, earning many awards including the BSA Silver Beaver Award. He also served as the Executive Secretary of the Great Salt Lake Council and a member of the Salt Lake City School Board. Richard served on the Salt Lake Pioneer Stake High Council, as well as the Young Men’s President, Bishopric Member, and Bishop of the Poplar Grove Ward. Richard was a devoted member of the church and loved the gospel.
Richard enjoyed hobbies throughout his life and had a tremendous passion for the outdoors. He spent many of his days backpacking, hiking, and capturing moments of his life with his love of photography. When he wasn’t enjoying the outdoors, tending to his prize-winning chrysanthemums, or reading in his chair, he spent time in his workshop building small scale working replicas of engines from the turn of the century. He was an avid runner throughout his later life, allowing him to complete local marathons. His training took him to City Creek Canyon every morning where he developed dear and lasting friendships with fellow runners that endure today. Above all, Richard loved and prized beyond measure, spending time with his family and friends.
The funeral services will be held Thursday September 5th at the Poplar Grove Ward at 1401 West 700 South, Salt Lake City at 11:00am.
