Richard L Stoney passed away on August 15, 2025, of natural causes in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard was born in 1933 in Salt Lake City to Leon P. Stoney and Gertrude S. Stoney Fullmer. He attended South High and the University of Utah, serving in the ROTC and later as an active-duty officer in the US Army.
He married Cleva J. Warner in 1952 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Salt Lake Temple. They were later divorced. Richard and Cleva had 6 children.
He was a high school teacher and athletics coach in Utah, Idaho, Washington and Colorado.
Over the years he taught a variety of academic subjects, and coached football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and tennis.
He enjoyed participating in and watching most sports and was an avid golfer. He liked to play cards and board games with his family, even designing a few in his youth. He loved to travel both in the US and abroad.
He was a lifelong active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in numerous callings.
He is survived by his loving children Keith Stoney (Eileen), Julie Mason (John), Sherie Scott (Mark), R. Brad Stoney (Julie), Steven Stoney (Sheri) and Jan Thorn; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; his sisters Donna Urbanek and Marlene Francis; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend and companion Jane Wadhams.
He is preceded in death by Cleva Stoney, his parents, and son-in-law Mark Scott.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens located at 1950 E. 10600 South, Sandy, Utah.
