Robert B. Hyte was born October 7, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Peter E. and Helen Phibbs Hyte. He passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and a room filled with family. We are grateful for our belief in eternal families and the knowledge that love continues beyond this life.
Bob served honorably in both the Army Reserve and the Air National Guard. He served a full-time mission in Ireland from 1963–1965 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under the leadership of mission president Stephen R. Covey—a time that deeply shaped his faith and lifelong devotion to serving others. Bob returned home from his mission on the same flight with Jane’s brother Dan, who was returning from his mission in Scotland with Bob’s twin brother Richard. Bob and Jane met at the airport, an encounter that led to an eternal partnership. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 23, 1966.
Bob was truly one of a kind—generous, loving, and accepting of everyone. He had a brilliant mind and a wonderful sense of humor, always the life of the party. An entrepreneur at heart, Bob built and managed multiple businesses throughout his life. He worked as a systems analyst, software programmer, and volunteer fireman, and as a chaplain at Draper Prison, offering guidance and support to those in need.
Bob’s life was defined by service and compassion. He and Jane served in the leadership of the Inner-City Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He started multiple nonprofits—one supporting women and children, and another helping individuals transitioning from incarceration to find jobs and rebuild their lives. He served faithfully in many Church callings over the years, especially enjoying his time with the Scouts and Young Men’s programs. Bob will be remembered for his patience, creativity, quick wit, and his remarkable ability to lift and inspire everyone he met.
His missionary heart remained strong throughout his life. He helped organize the Irish Mission Foundation and Shamrock Society, providing financial support to Irish missionaries serving around the world. Bob and his former mission companion, Thomas Harkness, faithfully served together under the leadership of Steven R. and Sandra Covey in the Irish Mission, holding biannual gatherings that spiritually enriched all who attended. Just this past October, they celebrated their 60-year mission reunion, reflecting on lifelong friendships and shared faith.
As a systems analyst and software engineer, Bob founded numerous software ventures, including innovative medical software and genealogy management systems—the source code for the latter donated to the Church, saving thousands of man-hours and paving the way for modern family history programs.
Bob had a lifelong love of genealogy and a talent for photography. His photographs won awards and captured moments and memories that celebrated family, faith, and the beauty of life, which reflected the same care and attention he gave to everything he loved. He was also known for his incredible storytelling and his gift for building deep, meaningful relationships, through his genuine care and service. Each Christmas, he delighted children and adults alike by dressing up as Santa Claus, spreading warmth, laughter, and love to all.
His greatest love was for the Savior, Jesus Christ, and for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend- always willing to listen, share wisdom, and share his testimony.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Lawrence, Ronald, and Steven; and his beloved twin brother, Richard. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jane Hyte, his sister Lisa Hyte, and his seven children: Laura Garner (Hunt), Michelle Lassig (Chris), Sean Hyte (Jeanna), Brian Hyte (Destiny), Darren Hyte (Emily), Lanae Kessler, and Caryn Tingey (Blake). He also leaves behind 26 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren who love and cherish him deeply.

Jane—Wonderful obituary. I didn’t know your husband well, but I see he was an outstanding man. As you grieve for him, may the Lord bless you.
Bob will be missed.. He was a great man who would always be there for the scouts when we had campouts and summer camps. He was a scout 'favorite' leader.
Thank you Bob for all of your support to the scouting program.
