  • Rolf Aase, our loving husband, father, grandfather “Farfar”, great grandfather, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully the morning of February 21, 2022. Rolf was born in Bergen, Norway on September 15, 1932, the son of Magne Monsen Aase and Kari (Karen) Bendiksen Rosberg. He married Kirsten Andersen on August 6, 1955, in Salt Lake City, UT, and was later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.

He is survived by his wife Kirsten, sons Jan Erik (Laci), Flemming (Kristi), and Steven (Laura), his grandchildren: Paige (Christopher) McNulty, Maren (Dakoda) Willden, Maddie (Matt) Zackrison, Shelby (Jonathan) First, Abby Aase, Kate Aase, Dayna Aase, Regan Aase, Avery Aase, and Evan Aase; and five great-grandchildren: Parker McNulty, Eleanor McNulty, Nora Willden, Jackson Zackrison, and Aubrey McNulty. He was preceded in death by his parents, his five half-brothers and spouses, Karl (Astrid) Aase, Mons Aase, Monrad (Gerda) Aase, Haakon (Klara) Aase, Alf (Else) Nilsen, and three half-sisters and spouse, Magda Aase, Olga (Vilmar) Andersen, Dagny Aase, his parents-in-law Thorvald and Anna Andersen, his sister-in-law and spouse, Hanne (Monte) Hales, and his great-grandson Aaron McNulty.

Rolf joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 17, in Norway. He was a very active member-missionary and enjoyed teaching the gospel with the missionaries. He had the desire to serve a mission but the Korean War and his travels to the U.S. put him on a different course. Rolf is a two-year Army veteran and was stationed in Paris during the Korean War. Rolf turned his attention to redeeming the dead for his family and other ancestors from Norway. Rolf and Kirsten were called as missionaries to the Norwegian Extraction program. They were also part of a temple group that attended the temple weekly for over 25 years, to perform family sealings. Rolf was also a temple worker in the Salt Lake temple. One of his greatest achievements was in family history work. With great support from his son Steve, he researched and had temple ordinances performed for over 25,000 of our family ancestors. We are certain that they were some of the first people to welcome him after he passed.

Rolf was a very hard worker, an entrepreneur, and someone who valued putting the customer first. At 18, he came to the U.S. with only $10 in his pocket with plans to visit his half-brother in Salt Lake and have an adventure. His first job in the U.S was with the Salt Lake City cemetery watering the grounds. After being discharged from the Army, he was hired by Wally Jacobsen Construction. He was a quick learner and gained tremendous experience in the construction business, and soon left to begin his own company, Rolf Aase Construction. Tooele and Salt Lake County were the growth areas for his new business. His last business was All-Ware Distributing, which was a lock and key wholesale distributor. One of his biggest clients was the LDS Church. He was very proud to see that account grow and be part of the church’s growth.

Rolf was best known for his ability to speak to any and everybody. He made friends very easily and all were invited to visit him and Kirsten in their home. They loved to have friends and family in their home for dinner and games. He and Kirsten loved to travel; they took several trips to Norway & Denmark, enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean, and spent a few winter weeks down in Mexico nearly every year. But most of their time was spent visiting the families of their three sons in Minneapolis, MN; Washington, D.C.; Williamsburg, VA; Northern Kentucky; and Bentonville, AR. They deserve trophies for the number of plays, music concerts, dance recitals, gymnastic competitions, swim meets, ice-skating performances, and sporting and cheerleading events they attended. Rolf loved looking in telephone books hoping to find others with our same family name and introducing these distant relatives into our family. Rolf was a wonderful storyteller and someone who loved playing cards and other games. It wasn’t unusual for him and Kirsten to be coming home or saying goodbye to guests well past midnight. Rolf’s greatest joy was his family, both in the U.S. and in Norway. He was generous and loving and will be greatly missed.
