Celebration of Life

The Chateau at Le Jardin, 1910 Dimple Dell Rd, Sandy, UT 84092

Saturday Apr 12, 2025 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Scott C. Welling, outspoken liberal, proficient golfer, avid gardener, outdoorsman, nature lover, environmentalist and small town attorney, passed away at home Tuesday 11/12/2024 from a variety of medical issues related to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a blood disease. “Hondo,” as he was also known by his Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers, had just turned 77.

An undersized overachiever and advocate for the underdog - he was, after all, a fan of the Utes, the Jazz and Cleveland Indians - he practiced law in Park City over 40 years.

He was the son of Vern Lillywhite Welling and Betty Jean Christensen. Survived by brothers Robert (Eileen) Welling, Tom (Cindy Sutter) Dowell, Spencer (Michelle) Dowell, Tad (Cheryl) Dowell and Robert (Connie) Peterson and 11 nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents, sister, Patricia Welling, and his faithful companion and canine companion Phibes.

A celebration-of-life for the cantankerous barrister will take place on April 12, 2025 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at The Chateau at Le Jardin located at 1910 Dimple Dell Rd, Sandy, UT 84092.

Guestbook/Condolences

Scott was our long time Midway neighbor for many years. We have enjoyed so many casual conversations with him. We will miss him! We send our love and condolences to his family.

- Gary and Wendy Graham

Scott was a friend of my husband for almost 60 years and someone I have known and seen at different throughout the past 40 years. He was a very intelligent man, engaged to the very end to the issues he was committed to. He was a generous, loyal and supportive friend. The five year battle he fought with cancer, largely on his own, was a real testament to his presence of mind and force of will. Now, at long last, he is at rest.

Condolences, peace and light to all who knew and loved him.

- Stacy Nordquist

So sorry to hear of Scott's passing. He was a great guy and a wonderful lawyer. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Hondo (so named for a John Wayne movie character) was the consummate frat brother. I always wondered how he maneuvered school, and especially law school at the U while living at the Pi Kapp house. His room was centrally located upstairs where we house live-ins often congregated. Yes, he was a bit of a curmudgeon, but that's what endeared him to us. He and John Nordquist, aka Nordy, were hilariously entertaining. Best comedy act anywhere. We should have paid them.

Grateful to have known him and to have the chance to spend a little more time with him recently. Hard to see him leave.
