Shirley Lorraine Campbell, age 89, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia on May 24 at Spring Gardens Assisted Living Center in Holladay, Utah. Shirley was born on August 22, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah as one of seven children to Fayben Charles Olsen and Elvera Chader Olsen. She graduated from Jordan High School and was married to Glendon Campbell in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8,1955. Shirley was a devoted wife and caring mother.
A woman of deep faith, Shirley was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She did not hesitate to love and serve in her community and give of her talents with her whole heart. She loved the organization of the church and served enthusiastically throughout her life, with service in the Primary, Relief Society and as Young Women’s President. The highlight of her church service was serving in the Stake MIA program for youth. She loved the Salt Lake Temple and served later in life as an ordinance worker. She had a deep and unwavering love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Shirley had a zest for life and many interests that kept her active and inspired. She loved reading and made reading a priority to further her education throughout her life. She was an avid collector, especially of dolls, attending shows across the country. She loved antiquing and made it a priority to visit all the antique shops she encountered in her travels near and far. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to create and run her own jewelry business, where she designed and crafted exquisite fine jewelry for many to enjoy. Extremely bright and clever, she was mastermind at bridge and played regularly with her dear friends in bridge club. She especially loved Christmas and took great care in decorating her home during the holiday season with beautiful Christmas trees, antique ornaments, as well as ornate and magnificent decorations that people loved to come over and see. She did not hesitate to give a tour to anyone asked!
She was also a talented cook, lovingly remembered for her English toffee, peanut brittle, and her special pomegranate salad, which her posterity still makes every Thanksgiving. Shirley found joy in the simple things: gardening, camping, exploring, and always taking the time to stop and smell the roses. Her garden was always brimming with the fruits of her labor and greatly cared for. Often known as “the harvester”, she could be found stopping along roadsides picking wild blackberries, asparagus, and sunflowers. Shirley loved all animals and adored her pets. She always treated her Westies and Poodles as part of the family.
Shirley was full of energy and light. She was the life of the party, a practical joker, a friend to everyone wherever she went. Shirley never met a stranger; it did not matter about a person’s station in life, Shirley was always eager to get to someone, hear their story, and make a connection. A witness to this quality is several lifelong friendships she had that span over 70 years.
A highlight of her life was designing and building her dream Victorian home in Holladay, Utah, where she and her husband Glendon lived for over 30 years.
Shirley will be remembered for her strength, creativity, warmth, and unwavering love for her family, and her larger-than-life personality. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 70 years, Glendon Campbell, and their five children: Kim Ostler (Calvin), Kristy Shields (Greg), Kelly McAleer (Ted), Katie Schmucker (Todd), Christian Campbell (Mary), and her grandchildren Elizabeth Ostler, Angela Russell, Laura Ostler, Allison Shields, April Jeppson-Reeve, Steven Shields, Ben Slone, Haley Slone, Hudson Schmucker, Dylan Campbell, Aidan Campbell and Riley Campbell, as well as eighteen great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings Sylvan Olsen and MaryAnn Biljanic.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fayben and Elvera Olsen, her siblings Harold, Bonnie, Dick, Wally, and grandchildren Lisa and Robert Ostler.
A viewing will be held on June 6 from 7:00-9:00 PM and on June 7 from 9:00-11:00 AM at the LDS Chapel at 4568 Holladay Blvd E, Holladay, UT. A memorial service will take place on June 7 at 11:00 AM at the LDS Chapel in Holladay, followed by interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South. Sandy, UT 84092.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Spring Gardens Assisted Living Center and Ability Home Health and Hospice for their abundant care and compassion.
Guestbook/Condolences
Shirley is such a wonderful person! She put up with me for many years when I was at my most awful, a teenager. I can’t count the number of meals she fed me, camping trips she took me on, or moments of kindness she shared with me. She has a wonderful sparkling personality and fire that definitely included letting me know when I’d crossed a line. I have so many fond memories of great times with Shirley and her family. She will be sorely missed!
I love you, Shirley!
