Stephen Wilkins Nebeker

1958 ~ 2025

Stephen Wilkins Nebeker passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and hard work.

Born in Salt Lake City on November 20, 1958, to June and Stephen B. Nebeker. Stephen grew up on 11th Avenue in Salt Lake City, where many fun and mischievous times were had with his three sisters, Jeanne, Mary, and Annie. Their childhood was filled with laughter, playful antics, and an unbreakable sibling bond.

He attended East High School where he excelled on the swimming team. Later he attended the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in Economics. During his time at the U, he was a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, building lifelong friendships and memories.

Bear Lake held a special place in Stephen’s heart throughout his life. As a young boy, he played along its shores, exploring the land and taking in the breathtaking sunsets that painted the sky over the water. It was also a place of hard work, where he put in long hours with determination and pride. As the years passed, he brought his own family to Bear Lake, creating cherished memories filled with adventure, laughter, and love. Whether riding four-wheelers through the fields, fixing up projects, or simply soaking in the beauty of the lake, Stephen found peace and joy in the place that shaped so much of who he was.

Stephen loved all things mechanical, always eager to tinker, build, and fix anything he could get his hands on. His love for speed and machinery extended to racing, sports cars, military vehicles, and his prized CAT backhoe. Whether traveling to new places or simply enjoying the wonders of nature, he embraced life with enthusiasm and a generous spirit.

Stephen was a devoted husband to his wife and found immense joy in fatherhood. He cherished attending his children’s games, bonding over their interests, and sharing his love of music with them.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Holly; his wonderful children, John (Carissa), Morgan; and his grandson, Owen. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Le Jardin in the Chateau, 1910 E. Dimple Dell Road, Sandy, UT 84092 on March 1 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The service will be held in an open-house format and casual attire is encouraged.

Dear Family Members,
I worked with Steve and LB Olsen. Steve was a down to earth man and very funny.
We had something in common, he loved animals like me. I'm sorry for the loss of a husband, brother, father and friend.
May the Lord give you all the strength today and always
Respectfully

“Neb” and I went to Nursery School through college together. We enjoyed cub scouts and scouting as well.
Primary and church was a lot more fun because of Steve. Played on the same little league Baseball team.
Of course Jr High and High School was off the rails with Steve. First kisses, crushes, RJ Dude ranch and fun adventures in his Jeep or in the mountains skiing. N.O. parties allowed us to laugh so much that it allowed us to be relieved of so much stress if even if it was just for a few hours.
Sigma Chi was a very special time as we experienced so many unique experiences as pledge bros. We even lived in the Sigma Chi house at the same time, where we shared so many incredible friendships, traditions and brotherhood.
Then after his studies at the
U of U Steve moved from a successful financial services practice at American Express IDS to joining our independent financial services group at the Rockland Financial Group where he over saw our Securities Business and Broker dealer relationship as our Registered Principal with his Series 24 registration.
It was very hard, you could even say it was impossible to be around Steve and not be laughing hard at his quick wit, style and unique delivery.
Steve and our neighborhood group were lucky our lives didn’t end many years earlier. Whether it was digging and spending numerous hours in under ground caves(Clay cliff area) just north of the SL cemetery or spending numerous hours in tree houses well above the ground. The sledding nights straight down the Avenue’s hills through multiple intersection ending with a huge jump. Bumper hitchhiking
and hanging on to the the car on icy roads during snow storms until you hit some pavement or a man hole. Snow balling, chases downtown scout camps.
Steve was extremely generous and always shared the bounties of this earth that he was blessed with.
Steve’s family was second to none, incredible Parents and amazing Sisters that always made you feel right at home.
Some great swimming parties at Northcrest and then at Steven Sr and June’s gorgeous new home on the high avenues.
He was always building things and tinkerer from the time he was a young boy. First in the neighborhood to build and have a motorized mini bike and motorized go cart. The way he built forts, tree houses and other things you would have thought he had studied engineering, architecture construction.
Steve had an incredible IQ that many people never really knew because he was so fun to be around and usually deflected to humor.
He was very loyal Friend and Brother.
May your family continue to be blessed with comfort, peace and the supreme knowledge that a huge reunion is taking place with family, friends and loved ones on the other side.
❤️🙏🏼❤️
I might not make the celebration of life because of some serious Health Issues. Please send my love to everyone if I can’t make it. I’m healing up and things are finally starting to get better as I continue to learn more patience and humility.

I know of you through your daughter, Morgan. You've raised a wonderful person and you will live on through the greatness you've passed on!

One of a kind. Near the top of the “Free Spirit list.” The mold wasn’t broken, someone yelled “pull” and that was it.

Had I not been there, I too would question the stories. But the blue Mustang sparking at cross streets going down I street, fire extinguishers and phone booths, Bear Lake boating in a captain hat, polyester leisure suits, rear tire lawn aeration, and the Floyd Kotter band are now the stuff of legend. As is the kind heart, tenacious will to overcome and persevere in the face of life’s challenges and a quiet loyalty to family, friends and those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this good man.

I will miss you brother.

I lived across the street from Steve on 11th Ave.
I don’t even know where to begin? Ernie said it best, “So many fun memories with Steve and the Neighborhood gang!” Steve brought shenanigans to another level, sometimes bordering on terror!😳🔥❄️🌊😂

All I can say is…I’m all about leveling up the fun but Steve made my ideas look amateur.😂

So many memories from kick the can, sledding down the Avenues hills, snowballing, fire extinguishing, 🧯water skiing, lake Powell, Northcrest parties, lifeguarding at Fort Douglas and we dated briefly in college, just to name a few.

Steve’s quick Witt, comedic timing and brilliant mind made every experience with him more vibrant! It was like fireworks were going off !🎆🧨 Sometimes they were… In places they shouldn’t.😳😂

I frequented his ward often with Dana Cutler and Laurie Coles. Steve definitely elevated the fun at church and many fun activities continued late to the evening with the neighborhood gang.

Steve’s extraordinary family was always so gracious and made me feel welcome and comfortable in their home.❤️

The stories are all true and yes it’s a miracle we made it through the turbulent years with all the shenanigans.😂

I have so many fond memories with Steve!

My thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family and all those who had the pleasure of experiencing life with this unique, fun, funny, brilliant individual!!.🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

My sincere condolences , Wendy McAdie

I was so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him over 30 years ago at Boettcher & Company.

I remember Steve vividly as a truly happy guy, always fun to be around. He had such great stories and a wonderful energy that lit up the workplace. Those memories from all those years ago remain as clear as ever.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will be fondly remembered."

Wow, so sorry to read this obituary. We had so much fun hunting together and the road trips in Neb's blue Camaro to get us to his families property at Bear Lake. Great times and good memories of a close friend. There will never be another Neb!
